Compare And Contrast A Christmas Carol
A Christmas Carol is a play that takes place of a man who has lost the true meaning of Christmas. He calls Christmas a Bah-Humbug and says it is a waste of money. This man lives a lonely life with greediness. This man is called Scrooge. There are few differences between the play and the movie, but many similarities. Some people lose the true meaning of Christmas. After Scrooge loses the Christmas spirit, a ghost appears to Scrooge. The spirit was known a Jacob Marley. The spirit said that there will be three spirits that appear to Scrooge (Dickens 9,10). The first ghost known as “Past” will appear to him at the first one tomorrow. When the ghost of Christmas Past takes him to his childhood, Scrooge realizes that he used to be a lonely boy, he wasn’t greedy …show more content…
When the ghost of Christmas Present appears to Scrooge. The ghost tells Scrooge to touch his robe. After Scrooge touches the ghost’s robe lightning flashes and there are thunderclaps. For the movie there isn’t any of that. But of course in the movie you can actually see their facial expressions. With the drama it doesn’t really show that much of emotion. In both the drama and movie there are many more similarities than there are differences. The most noticeable difference are the emotions that the people have in A Christmas Carol. Like when the ghost of Christmas Past take him to his love he had back then, it doesn’t really show when they talk to each other (Dickens, 16-18). Or when, Scrooge returns back from all three spirits and goes to the Cratchit’s house (Video, 1984). There may be few differences but most can still be noticed. In A Christmas Carol it will always be the same no matter if it is a book or drama or a movie. They will just be mixed up somewhat. Very few differences will be made. The story A Christmas Carol I think that the author’s purpose was to say that a greedy and lonely life will end up to something

The self published novella 'A Christmas Carol' was written by Engligh author Charles Dickens in 1843. It sold all 6,000 copies within 9 days of hitting the stands and was met with instant success and critical acclaim. It tells the story of bitter old miser Ebenezer Scrooge and his reluctant jouney to find the Christmas Spirit guided by supernatural visitors Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come. The effect the Charles Dickens writings had on this rapidly waneing Christian Festival was so far reaching and well received that many refered to him as 'The Man who Invented Chrristmas'. While Dickens didn’t technically come up with Christmas, he couched its spirit in a philosophy and centered it on an image that compelled people to see it and feel it as he did. “There seems a magic in the very name of Christmas,” writes Dickens, when “petty jealousies and discords are forgotten.”…

The spirit firstly takes him into the city beside a ‘knot of businessmen’ who is discussing the death of a fellow businessman with little emotion. The second visit is at a pawn shop where a charwoman, laundress and undertaker are all trading in items that Scrooge recognizes as his own without showing concern for what they were doing. He is next taken to see a corpse where he refuses to uncover the veil of the body but demands to see if the death of the man is cared about by anyone, with which he sees a family who are happy with the death. The fifth visit is at the Cratchit’s house where the family tenderly mourn the death of Tiny Tim but the final and foremost visit passes his empty counting house into a dreary graveyard where he sees his own grave. At this point, Scrooge breaks down in front of the Spirit, begging and pleading; ‘I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.’ His cries of forgiveness, full of remorse, end along with the Stave when the graveyard transformed back into his…

The third and final big difference was Grendel. The poem said that Grendel was a son of Cain. He would attack when everyone was sleeping because people were telling the creation story. In the movie, Grendel was a son of Hrothgar. Grendel attacked during the party because of the praise people would give to Hrothgar. Hollywood did this because they wanted to make them three dimensional, good versus evil. The movie removed references to God and Christianity, so that it would be more favored by the bad guy, Unferth. Hollywood also wanted to make it more appealing to the changing audiences to make them interested in watching it.…

Marley sends three spirits to haunt Scrooge to enforce that change. Scrooge is shown his past by the Spirit of Christmas Past. Past shows Scrooge a Christmas long ago where he is alone in the school house. “The schoolroom is not quite deserted. A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still.” (Charles Dickens #) Scrooge is then shown an older boy of himself, but still alone and Fan, Scrooge’s sister, comes to bring Scrooge home. Past shows Scrooge where he was apprenticed. Scrooge is then shown his old loved one and it is shown that they separate forever.
