Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916. He was sent to two boarding schools that were very dark and mean when he was nine years old. His teachers discouraged him and told him he would never become a writer. He wrote a few books describing his life in these boarding schools.
In a book he wrote called “Lucky Break”, he gives advice to many children how to become good writers.
Edgar Allen Poe was born in Boston in 1809. When he was a baby, his father left his mother. Shortly after, when he was three, his mother died. A very rich family known as the Allens took him in and schooled him. He learned a lot in school and wrote poems love poems for many girls he liked. His foster father had no more ties with Poe leaving Poe poor. He moved in with his aunt and married his cousin Maria Clemm. He became famous for his poetry and horror stories that he had written. His wife died of tuberculosis in 1847. Soon after, Poe died in 1849.
Dahl and Poe are different in so many ways, however, they are almost alike in some. Dahl wrote about humor or sometimes, dark humor. Since he came from mean boarding schools, his dark humor could have come from his life. Poe wrote of dark horror, probably of his hard life. Both authors had experienced hardships in the past, however, did not give up their dreams. Dahl did not see very much horror or sadness, but mainly strict, unforgiving, devious behavior. Poe saw mainly sadness and horror in his life, not mean behavior.
In my conclusion, both authors have lots of similarities, but also some major differences. Both authors experienced hard places, but did not give up their dream of writing. Instead, they used their hardships to enhance their writing. However, they went through a plethora of different emotions. In conclusion, these authors had many similarities and differences.
