One of the ways Byron is different than Mark is that Bryon is more informed. Within only five chapters already, we can see from the beginning that Bryon is definitely conscious and aware of his actions and the consequences that come with them. Although both characters will jump someone without hesitating, it doesn’t mean Mark isn’t willing to do the more gutsy stuff. An example of this is breaking up the fight between Ponyboy Curtis and the boy who Angela ordered to beat him up. If Byron were in this position, subtracting his dislike of Ponyboy, he most likely call for help instead of directly trying to end the fight. Another example is just the general stuff Mark does, like hotwiring cars, stealing, beating up certain people, all things Byron would never think of doing. This doesn’t necessarily mean Byron isn’t tough or not going to consent to doing a dirty crime, but it’s clear that he has more limitations to what he will and won’t do. Charlie said it himself on page 44: “Bryon, you’re an honest kid in most ways, but you lie like a dog. Take Mark—I wouldn’t trust him around anything that wasn’t nailed down, but I’d believe anything he said. I’d trust you with my wife, if I had one. I trust your actions, but I double-check most of your statements. You just think about it, and I think you’ll come up with the reason why you haven’t got a job before now.
