Romeo and Juliet is an original script by William Shakespeare. Baz Luhrmann modernised the script into a movie in 1996 to include a contemporary audience. Through the movie and script there are many differences and similarities. In this essay the setting, characters and symbolism will be examined and compared to talk about the similarities and difference.

Throughout Baz Luhrmann’s film and Shakespeare’s script there are similarities and differences within the setting. This can be seen when Tybalt and Mercutio sword fight, this has been altered by Luhrmann by swapping the street for the beach. An example of this in Luhrmann’s film is when they’re fighting; Tybalt and Mercutio are at Verona beach. In the original script, they have a sword fight on Verona Street. These examples show the differences between the film and original script. As a similarity, Mercutio is stabbed and dies in both the film and script and the fight happens in Verona. This has been seen with the role of Lady Capulet. Luhrmann has shown Lady Capulet to be dressed as Cleo Patra. This shows her to have power. Women in Shakespeare’s day didn’t have much power over anything and were seen as a possession of her fathers, then later her husbands.
