The Republican party was led Thomas Jefferson and James Madison first secretary of state 1789-94; second vice president 1797-1801 and James Madison co-wrote the US Constitution and secretary of state 1797-180. Other supports of the Republican Party were craftsmen, laborers poor farmers and small businesses located in the south region. The Republican felt that the federalist were becoming too powerful and that power could become a way to oppress the common people. The republican were fighting for the common man and the bill of right which was the First Amendment in the New Constitution. The biggest fear the republican fear was the federalist self government would become corrupt. The republican believed in individual state right should be able to self govern. The Republican opposed on the Alien and Sedition Acts they felt this act were unfair and a violation of the bill of right. The first major agreement in both parties was liberty for the American people but the problem was how much freedom should be granted. Both parties wanted to achieve a democracy, but were unsure government would work best for the nation. Their difference were great however, both parties’ disagreements establish the beginning of the political parties the creating the democracy know as the republicans and the democrats. Lastly major friction accrued from the departure of President Gorge Washington from second President John Adams 1797 to 1801. The most significance event that accrued though out the next presidential elections was the European battle and the relationship with the French was no longer; due to the “quasi-war” in 1798 and the bribe which the French government was enforcing; this event would be known as the XYZ Affair.
