Compare And Contrast The Second Stage Vs Narrative Therapist
In the deconstruction stage (1st stage), the Narrative therapists must explore the story and ask multiple forms of the same question and look for the language the client used to describe themselves and their problems and pull that apart to understand the way the clients use them self and their story. This is a very delicate process.
In the Reconstruction stage (2nd stage) other truths in the client's world can be put together in order to reshape the original story. When clients have reshaped their story they are encouraged to share it with others which reinforces the new story further and becomes their new reality.

When I first heard “When I Was Your Man,” the only thing that went through my mind were regrets as I remember how some of my relationships were in the past. Each and every time that I play the song, my opinions won’t change. According to Mark Knapp’s theory, there were ten stages to a relationship. The stages are initiating, experimenting, intensifying, integrating, bonding, differentiating, circumscribing, stagnating, avoiding, and terminating. I can definitely relate some of these stages to my past relationships.…

Narrative therapy falls within the Social Construction Model. In this type of therapy, the therapist is not central to the process, but rather influential to the client. The therapist helps the client internalize and create new stories within themselves and draw new assumptions about themselves by opening themselves up to future stories. This enables the client to not focus on the negative narratives that have defined their lives, but rather on future positive stories that can re-define their lives. To narrative therapists, the problem is the problem and the client is not the problem. Externalizing the problem is usually how therapy begins, therefore defining the problem and getting it out in the open. Narrative therapies typically are in the form of questioning to break down the problem and create alternative narratives to connect the new story line to future options.…

I like the concept behind the collaborative and narrative therapies of focusing more on the client’s strengths and abilities. I lean towards the collaborative therapy practices because it seems freer flowing whereas the narrative therapies are more structured. I often find my work with students more in the area of collaborative therapy, working more with facilitating a particular process. Most of the time this is done without a set strategy or outline of how my conversations will develop with them. I also appreciate Harry Goolishian’s quote of, “it is easier to identify what not to do as a therapist than what to do.” It has often been successful for me to ask students how I can help them for example, rather than press the issue of unpleasantness.…
