Devils and Dust What does your heart contain? Is it full of hate, or full of love? Is it cold and empty, or warm and full? Or is it filled with ¨Devils and Dust¨? In his poem ¨Devils and Dust¨, Bruce Springsteen answers this question. Throughout the poem, Springsteen uses descriptive words to illustrate moods, emotions and images in our mind. He also repeatedly says various phrases which imply importance to him. The repetition and imagery combine to create a poem that evokes gloomy thoughts and memories. The first line in ¨Devils and Dust¨ intrigues the reader and also is the first instance Springsteen uses imagery. This first line is ¨I got my finger on the trigger¨. By

    Figurative language and sensory imagery is used in the first stanza to create a tone of grieving, loss and nostalgia, through imagery of a dull ‘cold dusk’ and ‘frail, melancholy flowers among ashes’.
