Documents 1 and 4 are about water inventions advancements that would help the society. Such as in document 1, the Han government official are trying to establish advancements to their technology to prevent flooding. Also, for document 4 it talks about governor Tu Shih inventing an invention that benefited the
people in labor. This invention was a water-powered blowing-engine, which was for the casting of iron agricultural implements.
In documents 2 and 3 inventions and points are made about the positive attitudes towards technology. For document 2, it talks about the tools that was manufactured was a advantage to do foundry work and salt-boiling. Since the Han society attitude was more open-minded to technology, many advancements were made to improve their technology. One invention that gradually was improved on was pestle and the mortar. The improvements that were to it was increasing the efficiency, power of animals, and the waterpower. For most of the Romans, they thought that technology was wasteful and shameless. For documents 5 and 7 it expresses the negative attitude towards technology. In document 5, a political leader, Cicero voices that crafting to earn a living is disgraceful. Also the political leader voices that it is unrefined when men have the occupation of a craftsmen. Document 7 talks about the opinions about technology from Seneca, a upper-class Roman philosopher. The Roman philosopher states that tools and crafts were made by foolish men. He also states that the people who invented these tools were quick-witted, but they don’t have great amount of knowledge.
Only document 6 has a different perspective about technology for the Romans. This citizen talks about his viewpoint on technology that would do good for their society. He states that building roads a certain way can very valuable. Also he states that being aware of utilities can be gainful to the community. From another source the chariots were modified for the officials.
Overall, the Romans attitude towards technology was more inconsiderate. While the Hans attitude was more optimistic about technology. In conclusion, these two societies viewpoints about technology are very controversial.
