Metamorphosis and One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich are two novels in which the main character is living an imprisoned life. One of these men is being forced to reside alone in his room due to a maddening illness that has overtaken his mind while the other is an actual prisoner in a Russian war camp. Gregor Samsa and Ivan Denisovich are just two examples of how a world gone mad can change how life is lived in almost no time at all. These prisoners also come from different points of view and thoughts on various aspects of life such as work and how it affects one’s life, the necessity of food, ways currency is seen, and how a life in solitude changes one’s life. Through very different ideas and aspects of life, both men are fighting for survival. Before he became what Gregor saw as an abominable, hideous monster insect, Gregor was a travelling salesman. He never liked the job, but he did it for the necessity of his family’s needs. But, sadly the life of a salesman is a hard life to live, particularly if the only person who is working for the family’s expenses is never home. So Gregor’s life revolved around constant traveling in order to provide a small amount of funds for his family to survive. On the other hand Ivan Denisovich, the Russian prisoner, works because he is forced to by the guards. And Ivan does not mind one bit that he has to do a little hard labor. Coming from a farm town he is used to the work but mainly because it is so cold in Russia that in order to survive and stay warm. Ivan also gets treated a little better than most prisoners because he is a brick mason and knows how to do the job right, and if someone messes up, the whole squad suffers and the job gets redone without food. Both men work to survive. Gregor works to provide for his family while Ivan works to allow himself to stay alive and survive the camp. Besides working, Ivan also has to survive by eating
