David Gelernter is a professor of Computer Science at Yale University. He used his intellect to write a very effective essay on Computers and the Pursuit of Happiness to explain to us that we are not living in an “information age”. He helps us to understand by explaining that people living now are no happier than people living in the 50’s, solely because we have the use of computers in everything we do. Sure, computers make everything easier and more efficient, but it does not deliver us from our basic instinctual needs. One of his points that had a large impact was that if you find yourself in need of more money, or more information, you do what is necessary to obtain what it is that you are longing for. Once you reach this goal, you are no happier than you were before and you might even find yourself in need of more still. This article, among many since 1945, was published in the premier monthly magazine “Commentary Magazine”. This magazine has published some of America’s most controversial and intellectual articles of our time. Their website says “To read it is to take part in a great American discussion”. Gelertner’s intended audience would be anyone interested in Democracy, controversy, intelligent discussion, and maybe a bit of debate as well. His intended audience would clearly be looking for a topic that sparks a conversation on the matter and brings forth many different ideologies, opinions, and perspectives.…

In the 20th century, Americans, Europeans, and East Asians enjoyed material and technological advances that were unimaginable in previous eras. In the United States, for example, gross domestic product per capita tripled from 1950 to 2000. Life expectancy soared. The boom in productivity after World War II made goods better and cheaper at the same time. Things that were once luxuries, such as jet travel and long-distance phone calls, became necessities. And even though Americans seemed to work extraordinarily hard, their pursuit of entertainment turned media and leisure into multibillion-dollar industries.…

We employ communication technologies in many different areas because of the advantages instant conversations provide. In this essay, I will argue that it is not plausible to function without communication technologies. Functioning is being able to maintain our present mode of living, the way we communicate, learn, earn a living, and prosper. It is not plausible to maintain each of these aspects, in their present form, without communicative technologies such as the telephone and the internet. We, as individuals in the western world, have integrated communication technologies into the way we function. We could remove telephones and the internet from our individual lives, but we would not function in the way we do presently. In this essay, I will provide evidence as to how each aspect of the way we currently function would decrease with the removal of telephones and the internet. As communicators we would lose the ability to connect over large distances, as students we would lose a valuable information source, and as prospering employees we would decrease our efficiency, losing jobs and our standard of living.…
