Concept Comparison and Analysis Across Theories
Nursing is a science that has many theories to support the beliefs and clinical practice of the profession. One core concept prevalent in many nursing theories is caring. Theorist Jean Watson and Madeleine Leininger are both nursing theorists who developed theories around caring and nursing. The subject of discussion in this paper is the comparison and analysis of the concept definitions of Jean Watson’s Theory of Philosophy and Science of Caring and Madeleine Leininger’s Theory of Culture Care Diversity and Universality of nursing. Also included is an in-depth discussion of Jean Watson’s theory and how the theory can be applied to nursing practice.
Comparison and Analysis of Leininger's and Watson’s Caring Theories
Madeleine Leininger is known as the founder of the theory of transcultural nursing. Her Theory is also known as Culture Care theory (Current Nursing, 2012). The goal of transcultural nursing is to provide nursing care to patients that respects and balances the values, beliefs, and practices of that patient’s culture (Current Nursing, 2012). Leininger strongly believes that culture and caring is an influence that affects every area of a person’s life and defines health, illness, and the need or want to be healthy and disease free (Current Nursing, 2012). Leininger’s “theoretical framework is depicted in her model called the Sunrise Model” and identifies three modes that consists of nursing actions and decision that will result in culturally congruent care (Current Nursing, 2012, Para. 1). Leininger’s definition of caring relates to three modes of nursing actions and decisions. Those actions and decisions are: 1. Cultural care preservation that deals with nursing activities or decisions that assist patients/people to maintain their level of health, recover after being sick, or prepare for death (Nursing
