Concert Report: University of Arkansas Children’s Choir Fall Collaborative Concert When I first decided to attend a children’s choir performance I didn’t know what to expect. I walked into the Fine Arts Center along with the mass crowd of eager parents to see their children. The lights were dimmed and the theatre was packed. I among many had to sit in the aisle for the duration of the performance. The University of Arkansas Children’s Choir and Prairie Grove High School Choirs were both a surprising treat. Both choirs brought in talent and interesting pieces to the fall show. As the show began the director of the University of Arkansas Children’s Choir (UACC), Candace Davis, greeted the audience and introduced the choirs first piece. They entered the stage in single file line, and all were dressed in black. The first song, “Kyrie Canon” was slow and in a different language with piano as the instrumentation. The children were standing in a formation that mixed all SATB parts. I noticed this when the melody started having two melodies. One melody was sung by the altos and bases, the other sung by the sopranos and tenors. This song was not very interesting to my taste. They then sang a song that was very catchy and upbeat, “Polly Wolly Doodle.” The audience was swaying along with the music. The children also made the song more interactive as they whistled and clapped in certain parts of the chorus. After these two pieces the coir left the stage. I enjoyed the second song because the interaction with the audience made the piece playful and fun. The first song was not as enjoyable because I felt the song drug on and was not a strong opening piece to grab the audience’s attention. The Prairie Grove High School Choir’s women entered the stage. They wore long black dresses and sang a song about a boy being late for a dance. The song was very humorous and was sung well. The women danced by giving hand gestures that went along with the words. Then there was a
