Concert Review: The New York Youth Symphony
On Sunday, Novermber 20,2016 at 2:00 pm, The New York Youth Symphony performed at the carnegie hall Stern Auditorium. The program includes VIET CUONG Neon, BRAHMS Symphony No. 3, BRUCH Violin Concerto No. 1, and RAVEL La valse.
The first piece of music was VIET CUONG Neon. I couldn’t get in the carnegie hall on time due to subway lateness, so I couldn’t listen the VIET CUONG Neon. When I entered the auditorium, everyone was clapping already. I was kinda disappointed because I didn’t have the chance to listen to the first piece of music.
I was sitting on the DC2 section with my friends. I could see many different instruments on the stage, I saw string instruments, woodwinds instruments, brass instruments and one timpani on the stage. The second

To begin my review of this concert, I would like to first briefly talk about foundation history of Boston Symphony Orchestra. This orchestra was founded in 1881 by Henry Lee Higginson. The first conductor was George Henschel who was a famous bastion as well as an orchestra conductor. He was also a close friend of famous composer, Johannes Brahms. The current conductor of the orchestra is Andris Nelsons who is also the music director-designate of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. The BSO (Boston Symphony Orchestra) plays most of its concert at Boston’s Symphony hall and in the summer, it performs at Tanglewood. I went to Boston Symphony Orchestra concert on the 7th of…

Most of the performers were sitting down. The singer, xylophone player, and trumpet players stood up while playing. This was a little different because I figured they would all be standing up. Although this arrangement made it easier to see everyone and it made it more organized. Originally there were only two trombone players, but after a few songs a third one…

I was recently given the privilege of playing in the pit orchestra for the musical at my high school. I loved the experience of meeting other members of the music department, sharing many cookies. Challenging myself by playing music that I didn’t usually played exposed me to different music that went from five sharps to one flat. Because of my orchestral experience, I will audition for the Wellesley-Brandeis Orchestra. Having experienced a kind of merging between groups, I was able to meet different people (the band as well as the conductor for band), learning how to play a different style as well as learning how to communicate differently than that I was used to. Through the Wellesley-Brandeis Orchestra, I will have the opportunity to meet…

For my humanities report, I attended the Wind Ensemble concert at the Timko Barton lobby on October 8, 2015. The concert was so inspiring and refreshing for me since I love music and am currently studying music. Sitting with some many people and listening to beautiful music from a variety of genres was so restoring to the soul. Dr. John Jenkins, the director, was so motivating in every piece of music and of the program. The concert program ran smoothly as the ensemble band transitioned gradually to each different song piece. In addition the scenery added to the peaceful presence during the show. Since the concert took place in the lobby of the music hall, people saw the bright lights coming from the ceiling and they also enjoyed to majestic surrounding of the large glass windows. The Wind Ensemble concert event was a smoothing time to reflect on…

This diverse concert rehearsed nearly 15 different symphonies. We were required to watch only the first hour but, I couldn’t resist and looked up the entire 3 hour show.…

Music rings out from the center stage and bounces around the auditorium elegantly as if it were a metaphysical dancer. The symphonic grace entices all of those who are in range to hear it which is why Rod Hoffman sits in the second row of the middle aisle three seats deep from the left side of the orchestra. Completely submerged in the melody he is enveloped by a sort of transcending feeling. Words are rarely able to describe the joy that he feels by attending the concerts of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra. It takes him many weeks to find a means to culminate all of his emotions that he felt from the performance into a review that can properly display not only his reaction but still give an oversight that convinces others to give the orchestra…

It was Monday, November 17 cold and snowy outside Ophelia Paris Concert Hall, Truman State University but inside it was all warmth and light as Elaine AuBuchon started the Double Reed Recital. Having not been to any actual classical music concert, I was excited to hear the talent that we have in our campus. I took it upon myself to go with an open mind, without having any previous predispositions that would affect my reaction to the concert. I just wanted to go in there, not knowing anything about the concert, and see what I hear in the music. This concert was open to anyone and free admission. The program presented a variety of styles…

First on the program was Grand Quartet in E Minor by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832). Kuhlau was a concert pianist and a composer of the Danish opera; he composed over 200 works in his lifetime. The first work the ensemble preformed was Andante Maestoso, the intro to the song was very soft, and it had a sense of a nature vibe to the melody. The pitch then proceeded to escaladed higher; at points during the work it was changing from all four flutes playing in unison to just one stand out flute and the rest in a base beat. I really enjoyed the change of pace throughout the song and how one flute stood out showed off that person’s unique set of skills that maybe differs them from the rest of the ensemble. The work ended in a very fast paced rhythm and there was no insinuation that the work was going to end because there was no build up to the finale of the work. I really enjoyed this piece but the only down fall was it was very long and none of the other songs in the ensemble were nearly that long.…

At many stands, there were many different instruments sold. At some stands there were string and plucked instruments, as well as many types of drums. Each instrument looked custom made, with different patterns and sounds for each one. In another area of the festival, there was also an interactive drumming demonstration, where people can sit and learn beats and techniques from an instructor. It was interesting to watch, and it was enjoyable to see someone teaching another person about their culture through the music and beats.…

At the jazz brass band concert on November 4, the band consisted of instruments such as the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, tuba (specifically, a sousaphone), snare drum, and bass drum. There were seven performers in the ensemble, with one person alternating between the clarinet and saxophone, four people playing brass instruments, and two people playing percussion. The percussionists remained in the back, while the brass sections were in the front filling out the left and right side of the performance space, and the leader of the group moving freely around the front but remaining mostly to the right side.…
