Conch Monologue
No one knows how long it has been since they crashed, all they know is they do not want to leave. As I walked the woods looking for a fruit tree, I wondered when the conch would be blown today. I finally arrived to my favorite stop but it seemed someone else found it too. Those littluns, always eating all the food. We need more people hunting because of this. If they were useful we would have better huts and more smoke from our fire. As I became ready to walk away sadly I heard a rustle near me. I look around and do not catch sight of anyone near me. When I hear it again, coming from a bundle of creepers nearby, I realize that the rustle was a pig. I crouch down and finally identify it as it walks out of a run. The pig looked fatter than piggy, …show more content…
Everyone loves a guy with food. Maybe I will obtain a promotion. When I made a plan and grabbed a sharp stick, the pig looked heard me and looked at me. Suddenly the pig looked up just as I heard the sound of the conch. The pig did not run, it just looked at me with knowing motherly sarow. With no way to carry the pig back, I told myself to show jack the location of this king pig later. When I finally got to the platform, Jack had the conch and was claiming that he had blown the conch. I wondered if Jack was gaining power over Ralph’s position, but lost the thought when Jack said that they have seen the beast. The Meeting escalated quickly as the littluns interrupted. I noticed the fear spread and the anger settle on the two boys. Finally, Jack asked which one of them is the better leader. Shocked by all the news no one made a sound. Suddenly Jack decided he has had enough and stormed away. Roger, who was sitting next to me, stood and started to sneak into the woods. I followed him close by while piggy tried to bring the meeting back in control. When we have walked a decent distance from the platform I asked what his plan was and he said to collect the others so we could find

As the tension between Ralph and Jack increases, we see more obvious signs of a potential struggle for power. Although Jack has been deeply envious of Ralph’s power from the moment Ralph was elected, the two do not come into open conflict until this chapter, when Jack’s irresponsibility leads to the failure of the signal fire. When the fire—a symbol of the boys’ connection to civilization—goes out, the boys’ first chance of being rescued is thwarted. Ralph flies into a rage, indicating that he is still governed by desire to achieve the good of the whole group. But Jack, having just killed a pig, is too excited by his success to care very much about the missed…

This also proves many people change when no one (of authority) is looking or that there will be no consequences for there actions. This just happens to be a mere situation and hints that there will be much more eventful happenings to come. After Piggy is killed, Jack said (p.181) “See? See? That’s what you’ll get and I mean that There isn’t a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone... I’m chief!” This foreshadowed as well as displays Jacks savage side to its fullest. He has absolutely no sympathy for Piggy when he was killed. Jack destroys everything he can weather it’s a life or there chances of being rescued. This shows that jacks savagery has taken over his need as well as care for civilization.…

Ralph has heard more rumors about the beast and is wondering if he should or should not call an assembly to go over the accusations of a beast. Then Piggy reminds Ralph that people respect him and they will do what he pleases and will get much more work done than Jack becoming the chief; Piggy asserts Ralph: “If you don’t blow, we’ll soon be animals anyway. I can’t see what they’re doing, but I can hear” (Piggy 92). These words, spoken by Piggy, are quite critical; it also has much foreshadowing. He talks about becoming animals “We’ll soon be animals anyway.” and shows foreshadowing of the savage and beastiality only being able to see by Piggy and his specs. Even though his glasses are stolen and he is unable to use them; “I can’t see what they are doing, but I can hear” he still posses the power to sense the irrationality in people. Subsequently showing the rationality Piggy…

After the tribe decides to build a fire, Jack scurries without hesitating: "Jack clamped among them, the conch forgotten"(38). Unlike Ralph, Jack chooses to ignore the rules and orders when he disregards the conch. Jack's disobedience towards authority and how he doesn't care about rules is seen because of his recklessness. The author uses the conch as a symbol for rules and order, but Jack chooses to break the rules as time goes by in order to gain power. During an assembly, Jack yells at Ralph about him not knowing how to be a leader: " 'Who are you...You can't hunt, you can't sing-' "(91). The author’s use of syntax allows the reader to understand how Jack chooses to defy the conch rule because of the short exclamations he is making. Since he is not the chief, he wants to gain power by being reckless and overlooking the rules. Jack chooses to disregard the conch and its meaning; therefore, he does not want to have these rules and order. Another time Jack disregards rules is during the assembly the tribe has after the twins are scared by the beast. When the boys are getting ready to hunt the beast, Ralph makes a comment about speaking out loud and Jack responds without possessing the conch: " 'We don't need the conch anymore' "(102). The author uses the conch as a symbol of how Jack chooses be irresponsible when he denies the conch as the object used to speak. It substantiates how Jack dislikes rules because he ignores the rules for selfish reasons. The theme that certain people choose to defy rules is present here because of the author's use of details to describe how Jack no longer believes in rules. Jack is a rebellious character through the way he chooses to disobey the rules, and the conch’s transformation plays a significant part in the evolution of rules and…

The conch bestows a strange power on Ralph: it is with this that he calls the all the boys together from where they were, scattered and lost all over the big island. By blowing into it, Ralph produced a blaring, strident noise, booming across the jungle. When everyone is gathered, Ralph immediately has the other boys in awe and interested by the conch. He has their uninterrupted attention as they make plans to figure out the situation that they have, literally, “landed” into. The boys ignore Jack’s arrogant confidence and unanimously turn towards Ralph as their leader, for “there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and must obscurely, yet most powerfully, there was the conch (22).” The conch, again, gives Ralph a mysterious power; this “gleaming white tusk” has the gift of bestowing power upon the person holding it.…

The initial order of the boys is all a result of Piggy realizing the value of the conch shell, which marks Ralph out as the leader and is the symbol of democracy throughout the book. Piggy sets the boys on a clear course back to civilization, and the glasses he wears start the fire that should deliver the boys safely home. However, the islanders' auspicious beginning comes crashing down when Jack and his choir discover the exhilaration of the hunt. Jack's dedication to killing a pig leads the hunters to abandon Ralph's fire, which goes out to soon to alert a passing boat. This initial victory begins the rift between Ralph and Jack over the direction of the islanders. Golding's next prominent symbol is the beast; an evil presence that stirs infectious fear among all the islanders, which becomes more intense as the hunters' behavior deteriorates. After failing to kill the beast, Jack takes his followers away from Ralph's civilization and proclaims himself chief of his own tribe, with absolute authority and no law or order. “'When we kill we'll leave some of the kill for [the beast]”, he assures his new tribe, so “then it won't bother [them], maybe'” (133). Every 'bigun' except for Ralph, Piggy, the twins, and shy, kind, Simon joins Jack for the savages' first hunt, during which their lust for blood causes them to not only kill a…

After they confirm it the boys spot a terrified pig caught in the creepers where they are stunned and can’t decide their next course of action. “Jack drew is knife with a flourish” (pg.31). This shows that Jack is having a conflict within himself of whether to slaughter an innocent pig or to not harm a defenseless animal. While he is hesitating the piglet breaks free. He is embarrassed so he says: “I was choosing a place; I was just waiting for a moment to decide where to stab him” (pg.31). After that Ralph and jack try to play off their moment of weakness by talking tough. Jack than slowly becomes obsessed with the notion of killing a pig, and it is obvious because he is always stabbing trees with his knife and looking around insanely.…
