The main goal of this article is to provide knowledge to those who are in position to treat sports concussions, with the appropriate most up to date practices. The article establishes “level of evidence, knowledge gaps and areas requiring additional research.” The article goes into great detail of the most current topics such as risk factors (long/short term), evaluation and management, …show more content…
The objective of the study was to observe the recovery process of athletes, after concussion, to gain a better clinical knowledge base as to when it is a good time to return to play, after being injured. In 1999, 2000, and 2001, the study had 1631 football players from 15 colleges in the United States tested “preseason baseline” on concussion assessment measures. Ninety-four players with concussion, and 56 noninjured players were monitored for symptoms, cognitive functioning, and postural stability immediately This was recorded within a time frame of three hours, and one, two, three, five, seven, and ninety days after injury. They also used Scores on the Graded Symptom Checklist (GSC), Standardized Assessment of Concussion (SAC), Balance Error Scoring System (BESS), and a neuropsychological test battery in the study. The results of the study lead to the conclusion that recovery after football players attain a concussion, may take several days for recovery of symptoms, cognitive dysfunction, and postural instability. More research is needed to predict factors influencing the variability in recovery time. They also found that they can enhance clinical management of athletes recovering from concussion by taking standardized measurement of post concussive symptoms, cognitive functioning, and postural
