Literary Terms
Conflict – Conflict is the struggle between the opposing forces on which the action in a work of literature depends. Eg. In “Harry Potter and the sorcerer’s stone”, the conflict is between Harry and Voldemort.
Plot – The events that make up a story. Eg. In “The Lord of the Rings” one of the events in the last book is Frodo and Sam in the volcano trying to get rid of the One Ring.
Setting – Time, place, and mood of a story. Eg. In “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” they are traveling the ocean in a submarine from 1866 to 1868. The mood is normally heavy and contentious.
Characters – Characters are the people that make up a story. Eg. In “The Ransom of Red Chief” the main characters are Sam, Bill Driscoll, and Johnny.
