A genre can be described is the way an individual text is written. Each genre has a specific order and tone of the author's choice, that classify the composition as one of the following genres listed. I believe that a simple rearrangement of words and rhythm can change the composition from genre to genre. In class we have discussed the multiple genres in writing, Biography, Autobiography, Memoir, Vignettes, Confessional poetry, Personal essays. I was drawn to the personal essay “Consider the lobster” by David Foster and the Vignette “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid because I had the biggest personal connection to these titles. Vignette is neither a plot nor a full narrative description, but a carefully crafted verbal sketch that might be part of some larger work, or a complete description in itself. The author is explaining the relations her and her mother had throughout her childhood. The mother was doing what she thought culturally correct , I believe that the family is Caribbean or pacific islander of some sort. The girl does not agree with her mother's parenting style but cannot boycott because her mother ultimately controls her lifestyle at that age. The way that the author allowed her feelings and aggression towards her childhood were felt in the lines and flow of her stanzas. Her passion is felt and i believe that once she grow up she discontinued those customs for her children and younger relatives. In retrospect this Vignette was well put together and i believe that her words were not just heard but felt in the case of most readers. In the vignette i became self aware thst the premise and tone reflect that of a mother who by her own past experiences and repression of being a woman in her time and tradition, administers guide to her own daughter in a changed world, to chasten her daughter's modernways and current views on society and their culture. The author sets the stage as a sort of “how to” format for the way women should behave, dress, and their expected duties; or at least the way she feels the daughter in this story should retain such etiquette. A personal essay is either a personal narrative in which the author writes about a personal incident or experience that has provided significant personal meaning or a lesson learned. Or it is a personal opinion about some topic or issue that is important to the writer. In the composition
