Controversy : Gay marriage
The forms of marriage vary and always have varied historically and culturally. And now we are at the moment where we see other big change coming. Same sex marriage is that change that has already started happening in our society. There are a lot of perspectives on this issue and gay marriage is among one of the most controversial topics that the United States talks about.
One view on gay marriage is the protection of one’s unalienable rights. Declaration of Independence states, “all men are created equal… with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happinesss”. (par. 2). “a contract based upon a voluntary private agreement by a man and a woman to become husband and wife” . This limits marriage to a man and a woman. (Marriage par.2) To protect this legal definition of marriage, the government has passed an act that allows states to basically nullify gay married couples. It is stated in the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) that no states are required to respect gay married couples. This act means that there is a difference in a legal sense between the states that have legalized gay marriage and those that have not. There are both advantages and disadvantages to the health effects of gay marriage on the couple themselves and their children. In favor of gay marriage, research shows that gay marriage has a positive effect on the health of the gay population. The legalization of gay marriage in Massachusetts proved to reduce health-care risks for homosexual males. According to the American Journal of Public Health, there were “reductions in several medical and mental health diagnoses that are associated with stress — including hypertension, depression, and adjustment disorders” (Kliff par. 4) They also found a 13% decrease in health related visits to the hospital. (Kliff par. 2).
Although data shows an improvement in health, there are also research data that shows the risks of same sex marriage.
