directs the opera at the asylum; going out with Lucy but kisses julie and eventually breaks up with Lucy; gradually takes on a stronger leadership role
21 years old main protagonist naive and inexperienced lewis is loyal, compassionate and kind he is a man of integrity lives with his girlfriend Lucy as well as their friend Nick. directs play because he needs the money his idealism and naivety allow him to approach the job with enthusiasm and passion becomes more confident through the opera, rises to the challenge, and eventually chooses the production over Lucy and a life of student pollitics towards the end of the play lewis becomes more altruistic and sacrifices his needs for the patients and the play altruistic - doing things for the good of others without receiving anything in return he is able to see the worth of what he is doing for the worth of the patients forced to overcome several challenges - this leads to significant changes these challenges removal and ethical moral- concerned with the principles of right and wrong behaviour and the goodness or badness of human character ethical- of or relating to moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these he lacks self confidence and limited experience of the 'real world' he is transferred by his role directing the play and by the authenticity of the patients he involves himself in directing the opera to avoid conflict by the conclusion he is confidently resolving conflict and mediating between the patients without judgement also personally he confronts the conflicts in in his relationships with both Nick and Lucy by the end of the play he is more resolute and is facing a bright future the mark of his growing naivety is his ability to stand against his friends he is forced to confront his own beliefs and morals - this is liberating for him he has to take responsibility for both himself and for others - the patients
