Costa Rica Program: Case Study
I am applying for an Ashland University Global Education Grant because I am going to be part of the AU in Costa Rica program this summer and will also be taking the lab component of Biology 202. I am really looking forward to this program because I know it will offer me opportunities to grow personally and academically, as well as prepare me for my future career. I will grow personally through this experience by being on my own. Ashland University is only 45 minutes away from my house so I know my parents are there if I need them; however, Costa Rica is over 3,700 miles from my home. Just being so far away from my parents will allow me to grow as a person. Another personal goal of mine is to make friends. This includes within our group from AU, but I think it will be very cool to have Costa Rican friends. Costa Rica will also help me academically. Through this experience I will be able to gain 6 credit hours of Spanish. This will enable me to complete my Spanish minor in only four …show more content…

This experience of living abroad will give me knowledge for the future traveling I hope to do. The opportunity to travel to Costa Rica will be a blessing to me. It should help me to grow personally, academically, and professionally. When I return, I will be happy to share about my experiences to anyone who will listen. I am already encouraging people to study abroad just because of how much I believe that this will be an amazing experience. I will participate in the events of Pura Vida Week and participate in any opportunities AU or any other organization gives me to share my

The rich cultural and the many amazing traits that Costa Rica had in store for us, was only a symbol of the cultural and traits that fall within our team. It seems hard to believe that a country like Costa Rica and a small college soccer team can have so much in common, but along the trip I realized that in a lot of ways, we are the same. Reading the “Ticos” book could only teach each of us so much about Costa Rica and the Ticos that live there because it only mentioned “on the surface” facts that were pretty straight forward; It wasn’t until the trip, when we were able to delve into the culture itself and really understand what the book was saying. Costa Rica didn’t just…

A cono capuchino, is basically an ice cream cone covered in chocolate. I do not eat very many things with chocolate in them, so this is very interesting to me. I do like to try new things, so I may try to make my own version of cono capuchino! Another sweet that they prepare is dulce de leche, which is basically just the syrup of boiled milk and sugar. I have heard very good things about melcocha, which is just a candy made from raw sugar. The fact that the Costa Rican desserts are simple, indicate to me that the Costa Ricans can be very resourceful in using what they have, which may not be much, to make delicious food and…

During the Jazz age, in the 1920’s, prohibition is a law that enforces rules against drinking. Prohibition is the illegal distribution of alcohol from 1919 to 1933. This is created during the 18th amendment to reduce crime and improve the health of citizens. Prohibition created more crime and made a lot of people smoke more as a habit, taking place of their drinking. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald, speakeasies and bootleggers began to sell their own alcohol and make their own money. Because of this the crime rate was high and went against the point of prohibition which was to decrease felonies. Everyone in Gatsby, or most everyone, attended the parties that Gatsby threw and all drank alcohol that he provided. Gatsby is…

Escape the lifeless winter by perusing into the summer season of Costa Rica. With a few extra precious hours of sunshine, steeper waves driven by the Arctic storms and the perfect elopement from mundane days, Costa Rica’s verano is the busy season for tourism. Every restaurant, shop and hotel remains open late, and dinner reservations may be competitive. However, a winter trip to Costa Rica doesn’t need to cost an arm and a leg. Restaurants identify with US’ prices, the local bus is nearly complimentary, hiking and beaches are free, and fresh market food is nutritious and affordable. Doesn’t a snow-free departure to vibrant Costa Rica sound worthy of a slight sum of spending…

    1. Some people in Veracruz say their kindness comes from their native culture. However, another reason is that they despise the government's approach towards illegal immigration and wish to take a stand. Locals don't agree that the authorities should deport the Central American migrants from Mexico. The Mexicans would not want to be prevented from gaining access to the U.S., therefore they believe the Central Americans should not be hindered crossing Mexico. You should treat others the way you would want to be treated. This is a completely valid reason. The residents put themselves in the migrants's shoes and imagine the brutality and suffering they endure to reach the U.S. Should they be in their place, they would hope that some kindness and…

I chose my degree based on my experiences living in a multicultural household (Slavic/American), completing various career classes, and visiting multiple countries. My goal is to participate in the Russian Flagship program and learn a third language--Arabic. I plan to apply these languages to my degree; my educational aspirations include obtaining a bachelor's degree in business with an emphasis in international studies. This aspiration feeds off of my desire for travel. The struggle comes in figuring out if this is really what I would like to do. Other subjects that I have a keen interest in include: graphic design, architecture, neuroscience, music, etc. I hope that I will receive a mentor that can guide me in the right direction. Additionally, I aspire to…

Costa Rica and the United States of America get along quite well. Of course there has been a few bump in the road but nothing bad enough to make us hostile. We are good friends because we help each other out by buying each others products and such. Costa Rica and its relations with other countries are exquisite right now. They have been apart of the international community and have been neutral to most countries for quite some time. Of course it may be hostile to a few countries but everyone seems to have enemies. This country is said to be very beautiful so if I had the time I would gladly visit it and spend a few days on the beach. Things are cheap there and I can be cheap so it would work out great. This country is a very beautiful country that makes its money off of very natural things and I…

Last Summer, I visited Costa Rica on a kayaking trip with Falling Creek, a summer camp in Tuxedo, NC. Every year, 20 or so kids get invited to the program called HUCK, where you go kayaking in places around the world. Last summer, all of the kids that were invited went to Costa Rica where we would have a great time experiencing new culture and great whitewater. The First few days were great and those were some of the most powerful, best rivers I have ever kayaked.…
