“It’s Not the End of the World” by Judy Blume, tells the story of Karen Newman. Karen is a fifth grader whose life is slipping from her grasp. The teacher she has been looking forward to having for years has recently wed and is no longer the nice teacher she heard about but instead has turned into an evil teacher. As if that is not bad enough Karen’s parents are unhappy and are headed towards divorce. Karen does not want her parents to get divorced and does everything in her power to stop the divorce to no avail.

As a daddy’s girl, having my dad around to celebrate was the highlight of my day. As I told my family about my very depressing day at school, I had no idea what was about to come. Once the mini party was over and my young next-door neighbor went home for the night, I got ready for bed. I sat in bed talking and playing with my brother until my father walked in with my Nana close behind him. They sat on the edge of the bed and before my dad said a word I knew exactly what he was about to say.
“Don’t say it! Don’t say anything! I know what you are going to say.” I must have repeated this statement hundreds of times and each time my father shook his head as if to say that I had no idea what he was about to say. Of course he proved me right and said exactly what I thought he was going to say. “Your mom and I have decided to get a divorce.”
My brother broke out in hysterical tears while I just sat up and tried to figure out where the cracks in my life were. How did I miss this? Where was this coming from? How long had they been unhappy? Could I change my name to Karen Newman, because this truly was the end of the world…well at least my
