The novel, Catching Fire written by Suzanne Collins takes place in a futuristic North America called Panem.The setting is dreary and depressing since 11 of the 12 districts live in poverty supplying the flashy capital with their luxury products. Each district is responsible for manufacturing specific raw materials or products that are used in the capital. The beginning of the story takes place in District 12. Katniss had just came home from the games and she now lives in a big set of mansions built for the victors.President Snow comes by her house to threaten her to continue the star crossed lovers act because he is worried that her suicide attempt with Peeta in the Hunger Games may have sparked some uprisings. However, the majority of the story is set at the Quarter Quell arena. It is exactly one year since Katniss and Peeta had won the 74th Hunger Games the year before. Katniss made Haymitch, her mentor promise to protect Peeta at the Quarter Quell even if it meant risking her life. During the Hunger Games last year, Peeta made Haymitch promise to keep Katniss alive. Haymitch reluctantly agrees and promises to not tell Peeta of their plan to save him. Although Haymitch told Katniss he was going to protect Peeta, it turned out that he was planning to help her escape the arena. He convinced most of the competitors to use themselves as a shield to ensure Katniss’s safety.
