Base on my understanding, I have to agree with her general practitioner that Mei Ling is undergoing depression.
Being the eldest of four from a broken family, I believe that Mei Ling had to shoulder lots of responsibility, taking care of her younger siblings while her mum was copping with the broken marriage. Her disappointment over her dad leaving them and her feeling of loneliness in their new home was not properly dealt with when she was young and these issues may also be accumulated to her current condition.
Due to her work load, she may be afraid that her husband will use that as an excuse to start an affair. Moreover, the betrayal of her dad may also add on to her lack of trust towards her husband.
