Thesis statement: in the article, Should parents spy on their children's emails and texts? By Judith Woods. She mentioned many situations and experiences and I agreed on some points and disagree on many others as there were false assumptions, weak evidence and logical fallacies and that became a source of weakness in this article. --------------
I. Common ground:
Topic sentence: the writer gets out a good topic and was convincing and simple.
A. First Idea: “Kelly believes that technology should be part of family life with the sort of set of rules and expectations that you have for table manners or bedtimes”.
B.
1- Explain: Technology must be used by setting rules.
2- Evidence : becomingminimalist.com …show more content…
B. Second Idea: “ALL teenagers have a natural desire for privacy, which doesn’t necessarily equate with illicit behavior”. Yes as at this age privacy is must and keeping a distance with your children will come back with good relationship. 1- Explain: giving teenagers privacy and space will let them feel more freely.
C. Third Idea:”Yes, there are people online pretending to be 16 when they are really 30 or 50”. 1-Explain: according to some statistics it's found that many of social media users use a different age of their own. 2- Evidence: empoweringparents.com by James Lehman.
-------------
II. False assumption:
Topic sentence: as there was good ideas by the writer there were also false assumptions in this article.
A. First false assumption:" “If you have a good relationship with your children, you have nothing to worry about”
1-Explain: the writer says that there is nothing to worry about if you have a good relation with your children.
2-Refute: it's wrong as the writer have no credible evidence for this assumption and also the children mustn't tell their parents all of their secrets and need to feel more freely and have privacy to be able to face all of the future challenges.
3- Evidence: parenting.com, by Terri.
B. Second false assumption: “There are no more predators on the streets, than when I was growing up in the 1970s…”
1- Explain: the writer shows that the streets are safer now than before.
2- Refute: the writer used a story of a parent that tells the different between the past and now and that's wrong as everything changes by time and the life now is completely different that before.
3- Evidence: makeuseof.com, by Ryan dupe 2013
---------------
III. Weak evidence:
Topic sentence: the writer used some weak and uncredible evidence to get the ideas in the article.
A. The first weak evidence: there is no credible sources it just a research.
B. The second weak evidence: second hand experience as the writer uses parents websites and use their stories and experience.
----------------
V .Logical fallacies:
Topic sentence: there were also logical fallacies in the article and it's a point of weakness.
A. Slippery Slope: “If you are caught spying on your child, you risk creating a situation in which the child keeps secrets, is angry with you and rebels by leading a separate online life.”
1- Explain: the writer address the parents and tells them if they spy on their children that will make their children keep secrets and get mad and think of living alone.
B. Hasty Generalization: “ALL teenagers have a natural desire for privacy”
1- Explain: the writer admires that all teenagers likes the idea of privacy and that by nature.
