The man in the grey suit- By Ava Fried

Her jet black hair was pulled into a tight ponytail. Hairspray made the loose curls keep, while the pins kept it in place. Makeup concealed the dark grey circles which preceded underneath her eyes. Her tear streaked skin soaked in the arid pressed powder as her aunty continued to paint her face as though she were a doll. Aunt May had put a lot of effort into getting Allegra ready today. She bought her a dress last week, a black one. It had lace sleeves with tiny cotton flowers cascading down the middle. It reminded Allegra of a dress her mother wore, of a time when she was truly happy.

They had reached their destination just as the sun began its descent. Sighing contentedly, Allegra followed her mother

The atmosphere darkened significantly, and for a while, it seemed it would stay that way. Allegra was awoken by the tempestuous lightning, looking through the window she saw it as it hit the old willow tree. She immediately heard the click-clacks of her step-mother Christie’s 6-inch heels travelling down the hallway. Uncle Ben’s solemn voice echoed in the distance, deteriorating minute by minute. Quickly and impassively. But Allegra did not know what to do. Nor what to say or how to feel. Life was numb. No one was left to shelter her from the bitterness of a school’s day and the painful sting of rejection. No one left to protect, nurture and heed her against life’s hidden dangers. Her beaten up woollen jumper no longer protected her from the cold lashes of a winter’s wind. Allegra was left all alone. A young girl tainted by the world’s ugliness and …show more content…
She caught up to him just before he opened Christie’s door. He looked down at her with a slight smile, his tousled brown hair flapping in the wind. Allegra waited patiently for him to look at her with his hazel green eyes and bring her into a warm embrace, she wanted to sink her face into his chest as if to ask him to never leave her again, as if to tell him- I need you dad. Instead, he just shrugged his shoulder; a bewildered look appeared on his face. Christie yawned. She could not wait any longer for her month-long trip to Paris with her new

Set against the austere Icelandic terrain, Hannah Kent’s Burial Rites delves into the life of a condemned woman, Agnes Magnusdottir and explores how the people who live and work with Agnes transition from feeling antipathy to sympathise with her and her plight. Structurally the text marks this transition and the six months of her stay at the Kornsa farm also allows Kent to frame the transition metaphorically through the changing seasons. Moreover, By granting Agnes the ability to voice her view – readers can sympathize with her fate as a powerless woman in a patriarchal milieu that punishes intelligence when it undermines the subservient and dependent archetype that masculine arrogance permits. Integrated within a third person narrative the first-person reflections allow readers to judge Agnes outside the dehumanizing…

Emma didn’t even know how old she was – somewhere around 15 or 16, she presumed. Years of no love, no comfort, no house, had taken their toll on her – her face was nearly always dirty, she had next to no clothes, there was nobody she could call her friend.. all Emma had was a small backpack she wore, carrying an extra pair of shoes and another set of her current clothes – torn denim jeans and a faded, ripped, dusty black shirt. Emma never even knew her parents – they both died in an armed robbery while she was only weeks old. All she had to remember them by was the fact that they had no house, and so they were forced to live in the homeless shelter, and so when her parents were killed, the community (the homeless people of the city, that is) was left with a newborn baby to raise.…

The story, written in the form of a letter, shows the process of a thirteen-year-old girl becoming more mature as she expresses her grievances from her tragic childhood. She felt lonely, insecure and confused as she hoped that her father would come back. “Sometimes I had bad dreams. I would dream the welfare took us away and no one missed us, not even mommy. Daddy where were you?” (Page 163) At the end of the letter, however, the girl started to understand that her view of the world before was unbalanced and incomplete, “through a thin veil full of small holes”. (Page 165) She felt more released and started to notice “the greatness of the world”. (Page 165) She began to treasure all the memories she had with her family instead of thinking about her misery all the time, “we carried on living.” (Page 165) There was a great transition of her character from the beginning to the end of the letter.…
