In Crispin, The Cross of Lead the detail and characterization make the reader feel attached to the characters. For example, on page one Crispin thinks, “The day after my Mother died, the priest and I wrapped her body in a gray shroud and carried her to the village church.” After reading this the reader feels sad and sorry for Crispin. All of the feelings make the reader feel one with the character and get very attached. Also, when one of the characters goes on one of the many adventures the book has, the reader feels scared, worried, powerful and included with that one person.

For example, one of the character's ancestry leads them on an unforgettable journey. Also, some unexpected characters show up at different points of the book. The surprises keep the reader determined to finish the book and find out what happens. Even the slightest plot twist can make a whole character change.
