Critical Incident In Nursing

A critical incident is an incident that an individual believes an intervention made a difference in the patients care whether that be directly or indirectly, a situation that went well, a situation that in which there was some type of breakdown or unplanned even that occurred, a situation that was demanding for an individual, or a situation that shows what nursing is about. The incident that occurred on October 29, 2017, was an incident that something did not go as planned putting the patients’ health at risk. The incident started after assessment of my patient when I questioned the nurse about basic nursing care. The incident continued throughout the shift and after receiving report from the previous shift it seems like that shift as well and possibly others. The nurse giving report to my nurse mentioned that the family was extremely defensive of excessive touching of their loved one. Therefore, touching was kept to a minimum and only done on an as need basis. The nurse I was paired with did not question and simply agreed with the other nurse. My concerns for the patient at the time were the possibility of this patient developing a possible hospital-acquired infection and delayed healing. Throughout the shift I could not help but think about the risks that this posed to the patient and their possibility of an extended stay in the hospital. After clinical I felt a great concern for the patient, concern that this patient could possibly not heal properly or could develop infections due to the decision a nurse or multiple nurses from previous shifts had chosen to continue to
