I was asked by a nursing assistant to assist a resident to eat. Her food consisted of pureed fruit and thickened cordial. The elderly resident was unable to communicate and appeared to be unaware of her surroundings and she also fell asleep several times. I was unsure of how much food to offer in each spoonful and may have given her too much as she occasionally coughed. When assisting her to eat I was instructed to sit her up but did not sit her far enough forward as I found out later, while reading her patient record, she needed to be at a ninety degree angle when eating. I was unaware that the resident had Dysphasia and went to find her some water, when I asked the nursing assistant she told me the resident could not have liquids. When she began to cough I was slightly alarmed and tried to explain that I would come back with some water. I felt anxious and uncertain I could properly care for a person who I did not have any background information on.
Evaluation
The task was challenging for me as I felt concerned for a patient which I did not know past history on. I was unaware she could not have fluids and may have tried to give her water, if I had not asked the nursing assistant beforehand. Due to the resident falling asleep before I was able to finish assisting her I gave a hand over to the registered nurse, who was able to finish the task for me.
Analysis
Although the resident was unable to communicate or care for herself I did not realise she may have issues with swallowing and therefore could not have fluids. If I did not feel anxious I may have been able to pick up on cues about her without having to find someone to ask. More confidence would allow me to communicate more succinctly to the resident and interact better with
