The patient my nurse was taking care of had surgery on her knee. After the surgery, she came up with a Foley which was discontinued a day later at midnight. My shift started at 7 in the morning and the patient was supposed to void. If not the catheter had to go back in. After drinking a lot of fluids and attempting to void, the patient was unsuccessful and the resident ordered another Foley. Putting in a Foley is much harder than I thought. The patient was overweight and had knee surgery so she was unable to open her legs very wide. Trying to get the catheter in the right hole took a couple of attempts. As time progressed, Angela allowed me to do more things and trusted me to do them properly. She tells me I am doing very well and enjoys when I come. Angela says I am a very big help to her when I am there. Other nurses on the floor also enjoy when I come because I help them a lot. I gained a lot of knowledge because of my preceptor. I had a very positive experience at Methodist hospital.
Identify barriers and facilitators to goal achievement. Facilitators to goal achievement are working on a busy floor and having a good preceptor. I am lucky enough to have both. The floor I am on is a medical-surgical floor which specializes in orthopedic surgeries. There is also an overflow from general medical-surgical floors. There are many different diagnoses that come on the floor so I was able to see a lot. The patients did not have a problem with a student nurse helping them, which made learning easier. My preceptor was also excellent. She taught me a lot and always answered my questions.
