This week the students had PSSA testing. Because of the importance of the testing, it is imperative for the students to consume a nutritious breakfast. Unfortunately, many of the students did not have breakfast before testing; therefore, this week’s activities consisted of providing some sort of and A.M. snack prior to the testing. The students were given either crackers or fruit snacks.
In addition, there were two students who presented to the nurse’s office with abdominal pain that was not typical of how most of the students with abdominal pain typically presented. As a result, I was required to do a focused abdominal assessment on both of the students. There were students who came to the office for abdominal pain because they had not eaten; headaches, bumps and bruises. Thus, this week’s activities correlate with the Healthy People 2020 goal of increasing “the proportion of children who are ready for school in all five domains of healthy development: physical development, social and emotional development, and approaches to learning, language, and cognitive development” (Healthy People 2020).
2. List all medications administered or taken by a client and why. List the nursing actions.
This week I administered most of the medications the students needed. Those medications included inhalers for asthma maintenance, Tylenol for headaches, and antacids for those students who had an upset stomach.
