Nurses in the medical field have the additional title of being educators. This title is not as apparent to the public who see Nurse’s duties from the distance. Nurses are responsible for patient care, and educating the patients so they may live to their optimal health. The way valuable health information is presented to patients should always be taken into consideration to make sure the information is delivered to them the best way possible for them to understand. This is why having the knowledge of the individual learning styles as a nurse can be really beneficial when it is time to instruct the patients on matters of their health. When the nurse knows exactly how each patient learns best it optimizes the chances of their learning experience, and thus improving their overall health.…

I will discuss a clinical skill that I have been practicing by using a reflective model. Reflection is defined as being ‘an active process of witnessing one’s own experience in order to take a closer look and explore it in depth’ (Johns, C. 2005). The Nursing and Midwifery Council believe that all students should undertake the art of reflection as part of their training, in order to become a competent nurse, (NMC, 2010).…

I have come to understand that in order for a student to develop professional nursing skills, he or she needs to have the ability to apply knowledge from theory into practice. This I believe is a fundamental key to the success of becoming a competent nurse. My practice and the invaluable experiences I have gained from my placement, as a nursing student, have enabled me to reflect on the dimensions of nursing practice. I can testify that clinical practice is really an essential component of learning process for any nursing student. My Clinical practice has allowed me to have direct experience with the real world of nursing, to practice the clinical skills required for the job and to learn about the responsibility of the nurse. Reflecting back at my previous semesters, I can begin to say that my acute clinical experience has served as a wonderful and memorable learning opportunity for me to practise some of the skills that I have learned. I had a lot of mixed feelings going into this clinical because I did not know if I was going to make a difference. And little did I know how much this experience would impact me. As I reflect on this experience, I realised that I finished my clinical not only with more experience than when I started, but with a different aspect of nursing all together.…

During my placement setting while working with my buddy nurse and the continual direction from my clinical instructor, I have been assigned to care for a 85 year old female patient that was admitted with Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) and Failure to Cope (FTC). On the clinical day before I was told that she would be discharged on the following day. I also review her chart and saw the discharged order from the doctor and a keep component that I read is that she would be leaving the following morning between the hours of 0800hr to 0900 hr and being picked up by her daughter. On my arrival on the unit in the morning, I know that of both of my patients that she should my first priority. I visited her first, performed her activities of daily…

In this reflection, I have utilized Gibbs (1988) Reflective cycle. This cyclical model is a recognized framework to assist with a critical reflection on practice. I chose to use this cycle because it will improve my nursing practice continuously, and learning from the experience for better and improved practice. Gibbs (1988) reflective model consists of six stages. Boyd and Fales (1983) offer a useful definition of reflection, suggesting that it is “the process of internally examining and exploring an issue of concern, triggered by an experience, which creates and clarifies meaning in terms of self, and which results in a changed conceptual perspective.” According to Siviter, 2004, p165) explains that reflection is about gaining self-confidence, identifying when to improve, learning from own mistakes and behaviours, looking at other people’s perspective, being self aware and improving the future by from the past. However, having knowledge about reflection does not necessarily mean that nurses are able to use reflection in a meaningful way during practice. Self reflection helps nurses to learn about the actual practice of nursing and helps them to evaluate their own practice and performance. Reflection may also be prompted by more positive states, for…
