In Charge Nurse Reflective Report

During my clinical placement at Juravinski hospital, there was a patient who was in severe pain. The in-charge nurse informed me that the patient was complaining and asking about a medication to relieve the pain in her abdomen. Also, she stated that it had been 40 minutes ago, but she was not able to give the medicine for pain (PRN) since she was just being informed from the nurse who was in-charged from the night shift. As a result, I was late to start my scheduled assessment, check the doctor’s order to understand why the patient is taking these type of medications, read the progress notes, obtain the complete information to understand why the patient is in the hospital, since I had to assess the patient’s pain (PQRST) and obtain her vital signs before administering the medicine. The experienced on that day was very disappointing since I did not have time to gather all the information that I needed, and the medications were late. In fact, the other student nurse also felt disappointed since she too had some late medicines. Despite of the stress on the floor, I was glad that the other nurse came to me and advised me that as a student nurse and being on that floor is indeed stressful, especially when you must cover the late assessment about the patient’s discomfort and since I could not start the scheduled IV medications without reassessing the patient’s pain level and vital signs.
