Week 7, Question 1: What are some of the unique problems general classroom teachers might encounter when working with parents of culturally diverse backgrounds? (Culturally diverse does NOT mean only ethnically diverse but culturally diverse in any way as in the culture of poverty.)

When it comes to working with parents the general classroom teacher has to deal with a lot of different parents and when the parents are culturally diverse it can bring up a variety of situations. First, a teacher might have parents who can’t attend events like parent teacher conferences or meetings because they have work obligations or family situations that they to take care of. This means that teachers might have a hard time getting in contact with parents which can lead to frustration on the teacher’s part. The teacher can try to open communication by sending home

as the teacher, don't come off as judgmental but as helpful. The first thing that I would do is ask for the parent to meet with me before or after school to talk about the student. I find it important that this be an in person meeting and not a phone conversation because on the phone there could be miscommunication and it is harder to convey a sense of helpfulness. During this meeting I would start off with stating some of the amazing things that I am seeing with the student. I would then talk with the mom and say that I have noticed that she comes in everyday and helps the student prepare for the day. I would then ask her if there was any specific reason for this. After she explained this I would compliment her for being a part of her child's education but then make a statement that as her child moves to 6th grade the expectation is for to become more independent and that includes preparing for the day. I would then state that 5th grade is a time in which we want our students to practice being more independent so they can be successful when they enter 6th

    Yet, it is crucial that we expand the dialogue to include parent knowledge about school settings, even when that knowledge conflicts with our own. Develop trust. Parents affirm the importance of establishing trust. One mother attributes a particular teacher's good turnout for parent/teacher conferences to her ability to establish a “personal relationship” with parents. Another comments on her need to be reassured that the school is open, that it's OK to drop by “anytime you can.” In the opportunities we provide for involvement, we must regularly ask ourselves what messages we convey through our dress, gestures, and talk. In one study, for example, a teacher described her school's open house in a middle-class neighborhood as “a cocktail party without cocktails” (Lareau 1987). This is the sort of “party” that many parents wouldn't feel comfortable attending. Fear was a recurrent theme among the parents we interviewed: fear of appearing foolish or being misunderstood, fear about their children's academic standing. One mother explained: Parents feel like the teachers are looking at you, and I know how they feel, because I feel like that here. There are certain things and places where I still feel uncomfortable, so I won't go, and I feel bad, and I think maybe it's just me. This mother is relaying how it feels to be culturally, linguistically, and ethnically different. Her body of knowledge does not match the institutional knowledge of the school and she is therefore excluded from home/school conversations. Build on home experiences. Our assumptions about the home environments of our students can either build or sever links between home and school. An assumption that “these kids don't live in good environments” can destroy the very network we are trying to create. As the child gets into middle or high school, the options are limited to what the parent can do such as sporting events. As a teacher, it is important to be aware of these differences in order to maximize the learning and development of all students.     We always make parents welcome to stay and help in any of our sessions. This would give the parents a chance to see their child in a different environment and also to help parents gain the knowledge on how to progress the child in a steady way. It would be good for the child to be able to show their parents around and all the work they do, the child might gain pride in their work. This would also give the parents a chance to ask questions and to join in on a session. You could also get the parents/ carers to bring in baby photos to help with the all about me activity within the sessions, you could also ask parents from a different ethnic background to come and talk to the children about their culture and festivals they may celebrate. This would help the class to understand the different cultures of their friends and why they might do things in a different way to how they would maybe expect. The child would be proud of their parent/carer for talking to the class and would help them to understand that everyone is different and that you might need to help your friend to understand with explaining the different thing in a culture. Parents are also given the opportunity to volunteer to help in all activity but especial the off site ones like the sponsored bike ride we do every year to help raise funds for new equipment within the pre school. This would be good for the children to see their parents / carers supporting them and cheering them on to keep pedalling. Parents / carers are also asked to help with the off site Christmas church session we do singing Christmas carols which the children have learnt within the class. A parent/ carer would find this emotionally pleasing to watch and listen their child whilst joining in with their peers to sing.
