Cultural Engagement:
How Christians Should Engage Their Culture
What exactly does Cultural Engagement mean? What purpose does it serve in the lives of Christians? Those are just two of the many things that we think of when we are approached with the topic of Cultural Engagement. One definition of Cultural Engagement is “. . . A healthy way of thinking how we should respond to our culture.”(1) However, to me Cultural Engagement means to be able to turn away from that which we have recognized as evil and accept that which we recognize as good. It is very important for Christians to be able to distinguish the difference in good and evil.
God has given us the gift of free will, meaning that we have the choice to do right and wrong. While God has desires for us to do and to follow the things which are right, He knows that sometimes we will fail and follow the desires of our own heart. Don’t forget that God has placed us here for a reason. He intended for us to interact with those around us. It is not necessarily true that if you go around sinners you will begin to sin. That is where our Freewill comes in. If we choose to sin we will, but how else are we going to be able to witness to a lost and dying world if we don’t get out among them. That being said, I want to challenge you to find your place in your community, jump in and begin working for the time is surely coming that our Lord will once again be among us.
