Christopher sneaks into the backyard of Mrs. Shears to investigate. The original reason
Christopher goes to see Mrs. Shears is because he wants to assure her that he did not kill
Wellington and she reciprocates by slamming the door in his face. When Christopher believes that Mrs. Shears is not watching him, he sneaks around to her garden shed. Christopher explains this by, “The shed was locked with a padlock and I couldn’t go inside so I walked round to the window in the side...When I looked through the window I could see a fork that looked exactly the same as the fork that had been sticking out of Wellington” (31). All Christopher wants to do is find out who killed Wellington and will stop at nothing. With him sneaking into Mrs. Shears’s backyard, Christopher sees a pitchfork that looks just like the one that killed Wellington.
