Custer's War: A Short Story
I knew that tomorrow I would begin the whole thing over again. I would wake up and wonder if I’m crazy. I would meditate and try to contain myself throughout the day. I envied the dead who can look forward to becoming bones with their hair scattered around their skulls. What can I say, I long only to sleep without dreams. I have only my weed and my beer to console me. I am tired of all this war stuff swirling around me. How I wish I could find a woman to sleep with. I wish I could look into her eyes as sleep overtook her and her eyelids became heavy. I wish I could watch her as her head sank into her pillow. I feel if I could find a woman who would allow me to fall sleep beside her I would find myself in another world. Perhaps, I would be wiser in that world and would leave the past like I …show more content…
I felt I had crossed into Michigan, but I wasn’t sure. I kept looking for a roadside marker when I saw a billboard outside of Monroe. It said Monroe, the Home town of General Custer. I thought I would never tell anyone I was from Custer’s hometown. What type of man would admire a man who killed women and children and led his men to death because he followed the demands of his pride? Then, again he acted as all officers act, which is why officers have as much to fear from their sergeants as from the enemy. VI When I arrived home it was dark, and I went to bed. In the morning I called Aunt Claudia. She didn’t answer. I called again around noon. She didn’t answer and after lunch I drove to see her. Arriving at her home, I knocked. She didn’t answer. Her car was parked in the driveway. I walked in the woods. I couldn’t find her. I went to the work shed. In the rear of the shed and under the windowsill, my uncle had made a small shelf where he hid his spare key. I opened the house and found her lying on the couch. At first I thought she was asleep. Her eyes were open as if she stared at something in the distance at least a 100 yards in the

George Armstrong Custer was considered a renowned All American Army general who famously lost his life at the hands of Native American warriors at the Battle of Little Bighorn. Philbrick notes that Custer was “a true prodigy of war—charismatic, quirky and fearless” (p.xvi). With these attributions he soared to become one of the youngest brigadier generals at the young age of 23. Lieutenant General Philip Sheridan wrote praising Custer to his wife. "Permit me to say, Madam," he wrote, "that there is scarcely an individual in our service who has contributed more to bring about this desirable result than your gallant husband" (Wert, 1996, p.225). However, Custer is known only for one day, the day he died, and the day his entire military career…

Music blared from my cellphone as I folded my laundry. Jeans went in a pile at the end of my bed and shirts were folded in the center. Mom had come home a few hours ago and was napping in her room on the other side of the house, a few walls between us. I heard the front door of our apartment pop open, so I dropped my clothes and ambled out of my room, through the hallway, and into the kitchen.…

I entered into the new house, it was so empty. I could feel the weight in the air. The cold, frightening new air. I walked over to what is now my parents room, I rolled the sleeping bag onto the carpet, and slept on the floor. Something felt strange, I was sleeping on carpet. Never before had I fallen asleep on carpet. Always on hardwood floor. I recall falling asleep in sorrow, trying to grasp a little bit of hope out of myself. I tried to see the best in the situation, but all I could think about was the people I just left, all I could think about was the past. I couldn’t bring myself to the present. My mind and heart still in Ecuador, my cold body here. This was probably one of the worst moments of my life. I don’t think I have ever cried so much. I don’t think that I’ve ever felt so isolated. I didn’t know who I was. Everything that made me had the reset button pushed on it. All of my pride and courage felt lost. I felt so weak. I needed to become someone new.…

As we walk down the stairs every door in the house except for the doors blocking the elements have been ripped from their hinges, even the bathroom door. The hoarder has a smile on her face, bright and bubbly little demon. My father enters the room with all of our things packed in the car, ready to bring us back home. I slip on my shoes, as does my sister, walking out the door. He doesn’t notice that we’ve slept in these cloths. Thank god we get to go…

My mind is fuzzy, the last remains of a dream being chased away by the realization that I am awake again. It was a nice dream, something about sitting in a big oak tree in a meadow full of flowers but the details are fading faster even as I try to recall them. With a sigh, I allow my brain to focus and cautiously open one eye. The sun was peeking out from the curtains, giving the room a light shade of red mixed with orange. I sat up and looked at the alarm clock beside my bed and saw that it was 6 am. I gave out a loud grown before getting out of the comfy warm…
