Costco employs a divisional organizational structure that is nationwide and divided into three different divisions. Each division is controlled by an Executive Vice President and the regions are divided for the Senior Vice President. Costco opens its stores in different states such as the first time to open in South Carolina, “It’s pretty much spread like wildfire” (McMaster, 2001). One of the pressure for change was the economy and the recession that the businesses encountered and to be more strategic than its competitors to sell products as bulk to save money and make the consumer happy especially with large families. The Organization I will be researching is ZAPPOS. Zappos is an Internet based shoe company that has blossomed over the years since 1999. They have ventured on to more than just shoes, servicing the public with offering things like accessories, handbags, watches, clothing, and even home goods. If there was an award for the best company in the U.S., I believe ZAPPOS would receive this award. The Lewis case showed several leadership behaviors used to motivate her staff at Staples. One of the leadership behaviors displayed when she was hired in her first position as director of operations. Mrs. Lewis had to fix stores that were underperforming and needed to be turned around quickly. She made tough decisions in the beginning by replacing 25 store associates. She implemented a new team that set contentious store standards, training and strengthened performance. Mrs. Lewis managed with strong restraints in the beginning and then loosed up as things improved. Because of the success with this project, she was given more responsibility as director of sales. She was then later promoted to merchandising dept as vice president and divisional merchandising. In this case study Roger Cahill has been acting as the head of mobile division for less than a year. Currently he is struggling as he faces great difficulties adapting BoldFlash to a changing marketplace. The problem really started a year ago when Mr. Jim Harrison appointed the young Roger Cahill to a VP position. Although Roger has led a research project in his previous work, he is only 24 years old and inexperienced to manage a company at VP level. Positions at those levels require years of strategic leadership and management skills. Nevertheless in the last 12 months, the company focused primarily on the redundant production of customized chips without further research or product development in new and upcoming areas like the storage device. This negligence from both product development and marketing is a huge loss to the company as they missed out on the opportunity to launch new product line; therefore missed the opportunity to penetrate the potential market. Now the company has old products not priced competitively and struggling to penetrate the marketshare. Also the four groups within the division, product development, marketing, sales and manufacturing are constantly in conflict and don’t have the reinforcement from the leadership to work as a team. Although Cahill has observed the dysfunctions, he has not implemented any processes or trainings to work as a cross functional team. The company’s profit margins are low and Cahill has to take initiatives to suggest number of changes. With the staff that has low morale and lacking motivation, Cahill has to develop action plan for improvement.
