Greed and gluttony drive humans into the greatest lengths of corruption. This is the culprit and cause of Colombia becoming the biggest cocaine producer in the world. The link between poverty and drug trafficking is thrived from the corruptness of the global capitalist system. This is illustrated through politics/ economics, the environment and through social and health impacts.
Planet Earth has about 6 billion people, almost half are (2.7 billion) declared poor, 1.4 out of the 2.7 billion live under the poverty line ( $1.25/ day) , and 72 million primary school aged children are unable to attain primary education 3 . This is all caused by the corrupt economic system in which investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, is maintained by private individuals or states such as, first world countries. The United States alone consumes about 1/4th of the world’s resources3, through Trans-national corporations located in some of the world’s poorest countries (3rd, 4th, 5th world), establishing free trade sweat shops, and factories , which manipulate, lie and underpay people in poorer countries, allowing some of these companies to become richer than actual countries, as a result, highly regressing the development of these countries. In places like Colombia situations like that are not uncommon, and when the need to survive is greater than morals and values the level of desperation due to insufficient employment possibilities is overwhelming, causing leisure and consumption activities which are ways of finding a social identity 4.
