CYP Core 3.4 – Support Children and Young People’s Health and Safety

1.1 Describe the factors to take into account when planning healthy and safe indoor and outdoor environments and services
When planning a healthy and safe environment in my setting I have to take into account a number of factors.
The space I have and the space I allow the children in my care to use. For example the children have quiet time in the front room, messy time and free play in the play room and the garden, the children do not go into the kitchen apart from to pass through to the bathroom or to observe our prepared food going into the oven.
I also have to take into account how many children I am caring for, and their ages and stage.
The weather plays a big factor, for example if it’s very hot I wouldn’t allow children outdoors for long periods of time and they would not go out without sun cream and a sun hat. I would have a signed permission form for the cream in line with health and safety.

1.2Explain how health and safety is monitored and maintained and how people in the work setting are made aware of risks and hazards and encouraged to work safely
I do a weekly risk assessment of my property as a hole, to check that it is safe for the children I care for and also for myself. I check everywhere in great detail and add to my risk assessment file when necessary. A risk assessment is also done for every pet in my home as I feel children should be able to experience animals, but in a safe and secure environment and the children I care for enjoy this.
I have risk assessments in place for the park, the school run, soft play and another child minders house, these are looked at on a regular basis to ensure they are still appropriate and amended where I think it is needed.
I ask any individual working with me to follow this high standard and to ensure they alert me to any dangers they may find. I also ask they attend health and safety courses with myself.

In my setting every activity has to be planned: This means that I plan for the unexpected or unusual to happen. So my foremost plan is to be alert. Therefore, I am alert when planning an activity; making sure the location or setting of what I plan to do with the Children is the right environment for the activity for example if I was using bikes and scooters in the play area outside. Before allowing the children to play outside I would carry out a garden check, I would make sure sure the main gate to the setting was locked and that all other fences and gates were secure, I would clean away any rubbish/ animal feaces, I would also ensure that the equipment; i.e bikes and scooters are in safe and good working condition. During a garden check I check that the plants are not of a danger to anyone, for example, nettles. Once outside I would ensure the bikes and scooters are used in the proper manner and with plenty of space so in my setting we would not use them indoors as there is not enough space they would be used outside. I am aware that a varied environment supports Children and Young people’s learning and development, it gives them confidence to explore and learn in safe and secure yet challenging indoor or outdoor space. In my setting risk assessments are carried out for all activities and regular checks are carried out around the…

Every school is required to carry out regular risk assessments of the premises and activities to identify any hazards in advance, but all members of staff should also be aware that risk assessment is an ongoing process, and that they must remain vigilant and report any potential hazards to the Health and safety officer.…

Staff need to also take into account weather conditions such as raining, ice, sun win for example ensuring that the children wear sun cream if the weather is hot, or if it’s raining take the children in and undercover playground. Staff must ensure that there is no harmful plants outside and must report this immediately if found. If staff find faeces in the playground they must clean up with gloves and antibacterial spray to help keep the children safe. We also carry out risk assessment on every activity around the school and adapt it to meet the children’s needs. When taking the children on trips out of school we also ensure that they we have the right amount of staff, take a mobile phone, and give children labels and high visible vests to wear and we also carry out a risk assessment that is sent to the health and safety officer before taking them…

Describe why risk assessment approaches may differ at various stages of child development.Risk assessment is very important in a childcare setting, it is a way to ensure that any potential danger to a child has been noticed and all possible measures have been taken to minimise or remove that risk. The health and safety policy in the setting should have a section covering risk assessment and should cover things such as checking for hazards on a regular basis and deciding what measures need to be taken (if any), deciding on what action to take, how the action will be funded and who’s responsible for taking this action. A risk assessment should have a checklist to be followed which should include things like: heating, lighting, electrical and safety equipment, windows, doors, security, food, toys, fire risk, kitchen and outdoor play area. Risk assessments should cover anything which a child in the setting may come into contact with. It is a good idea for the setting to have one member of staff who carries out the health and safety responsibilities and has overall responsibility for safety and first aid in the setting, this person should carry out the risk assessments and organise any work that needs to be carried out as a result of their findings. The risk assessment itself may differ depending on the ages of the children who attend the setting, it is important therefore that the setting uses the appropriate safety equipment, for example if the setting cares for pre-school children they will need to use equipment such as socket covers, stair gates and fire guards, whereas this equipment may not be as appropriate for older children. Any equipment that is used in the childcare setting should conform to the British standards agency regulations, all equipment should carry the British kite mark as this indicates that it has been tested to British standards and meets the current…
