Any civilization’s history is filled with it’s ups and downs, the qualities that dictate whether the past is looked on with dread or nostalgia, usually being the former. There can be good reason for this, as the past is undoubtedly filled with tragedy and hardships. The evidence for this is found throughout history, from the middle ages, to the warfare of the Chinese Kingdoms, and even the slow decline of the Roman Empire to name a few. Entire societies would become plagued with poverty, separation, and the falling of once upheld morals, leaving citizens desperately dreaming for better days. The late middle ages provide a clear example of this, as well as showing how one negative quality will lead to another. As more and more people were killed in Europe by the black plague, production would grind to a halt, with higher inflation taking it’s place, leading to skilled craftsman refusing to take new members. This domino effect climaxed in civil unrest and revolt, causing the economy to die along with one fourth of the population. The Roman Empire experienced its fair share of economic troubles during their decline. The threat of invasion required high taxes to pay for military spending, and agriculture would suffer as farmland would wear out it’s usefulness. Farmers would move to the city, causing riots or participating in bread and circus carnivals that were only meant to keep the population complacent, instead of addressing the problem directly. Any organization, from the biggest nation to the smallest family will struggle to overcome failure of economics, morality, and unity. Nomatter what people like to believe, human civilization is still vulnerable to these negative influences, and the sooner humanity learns to not let history repeat itself, the better. If there is a silver lining to this, it is that one man’s worst day is another mans best. When there is a nation experiencing poverty, moral decline, and civil war, there will be another thriving on its own golden age of prosperity, honesty, and peace.
