Health care administrators and providers use the information on dashboard to view current information, set future goals, and aids in visualizing the length of time a goal will be met. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an area of performance improvement and a nursing action plan.
Analysis of the data
The area of performance improvement indicator selected from the dashboard, was patients with acquired pressure ulcers in quarter one for year 2010. The target for this quarter was set at 0.00. The Performance improvement indicator of patients with acquired pressure ulcers relates to patients that have acquired a pressure ulcer during their hospitalization. The actual percentage with patients who acquired pressure ulcers was 4.35. The national mean average was set at 6.15 percent. I selected the area of patient’s with acquired pressure ulcers because pressure ulcers cause patients to have longer hospital stays; they increase the mortality rates inpatient. Pressure ulcers also drive health care costs up every year. Pressure ulcers that have been acquired during patient hospitalization are considered a never event. Malnutrition is associated with increased risk of Pressure ulcers and delayed healing; therefore, nutrition screening and assessment are essential to identify risk of malnutrition, including poor food/fluid intake and unintended weight loss (Posthauer, Banks, Doner, & Schols, 2015). A specific way to improve this area would be to input nutritional data specific to each patient. Specific information related to body mass index, pertinent lab values, such as albumin levels, recent significant weight loss, or weight gain.
