I am teaching classes comprised of students that are achieving below grade level; I have often asked myself how I am going to get them to grow at a more rapid pace than their peers in order to get them back on track. Many of my tactics have centered around strategies focused on their academic needs. However, as Gayle Gregory and Lin Kuzmich pointed out in Data Driven Differentiation in the Standards-Based Classroom, it is important to look at the commonalities between the students and the possibilities as to the cause of their under-achievements. Many of my students were not at a place where they were ready to learn; engaging each student daily by catering lessons to their individual needs and interests is vital. Doing school is a book that teaches us the troubling view of ways to seek high grades and future success. Faircrest has five students who are high in prosperity, hard workers and earn awards for being astonishing students. Denise Pope, a lecturer at the Stanford University School of Education, she brings an idea to track these students and distinguish what’s behind the success. For these students, they believe being able to understand and be ahead of the class you must multi-task, cheat, and scheme. These students have divergent lives, they act and learn in different ways. So how are teachers, students, and school systems going to keep up with these styles.…

To better support learners development educators should work collaboratively with students, and families. “Students will float to the mark you set,” said Mike Rose (Rose 110). Every day students are being held to a lower standard. Not only does this happen at school, but in the home life as well. Today’s generation seems to have a lot of things done for them. We just hand out A’s, and allowance that hasn’t even been earned. From these poor examples being set for us, we lose the motive and drive that it takes to succeed. People are going through life with a sense that they are owed something.…

One of the ways that the learning can be differentiated is through the support given to the children. This could be whether or not they get adult support as well as the support offered through the use of worksheets and resources. Resources that could be implemented in order to ensure that lower ability students are still able to progress in their learning include, key word banks, work sheets with additional support e.g sentence starters and flashcards. By implementing these resources and support systems it allows the lower ability students to achieve the same lesson objectives just with additional guidance. This method of differentiation allows all of the children to be able to complete the same tasks and reach the same objectives but helps to ensure that they are all supported and is therefore a positive method for keeping up their self-confidence and helping them to progress in their own learning.…

Learners not only come from different cultures and backgrounds but they also differ in their abilities, needs, and the way they learn. Their differences must be recognised and considered by teachers who should treat them fairly and value each individual regardless of any differences. This way, learners will feel welcomed and included into the learning environment, engaged, empowered and supported by teachers (Gravells, 2008).…

There are way too many case studies that support grade retention for our children who do not meet the required curriculum. One argument is that “low-achieving students who are promoted to a grade a level where they are unable to do the required work suffer emotionally and drop further behind in their school work” (Beck, Cook, and Kearney as cited in Barlow and Schwager, 1990, p.3). I felt like this about one of my students this pass school term. This child was in second grade and could not complete simple math problems nor could she pronounce words that should have been learned in kindergarten. This was a concern because this child had not completed or learned the basics necessary for promotion, but she was being placed in a situation where she would not be able to handle the stress of being pushed to learn things that she should have already known in addition to learning things to get her prepared for the next grade level.…

Mike Rose’s “I Just Wanna Be Average” essay makes me mad, but, at the same time, it makes me realize how lucky I am. I had never been in a special program, so I never thought about the students who were in those programs. Actually, my school had the kind of vocational track that the essay introduced, but I didn’t care about them because I wasn’t part of the track. Therefore, I really didn’t know that the students who were in that kind of special programs could be lost their identity due to poor instruction and suffered from lacking of motivation. Reading this essay, I double-checked that education needs the harmony of students, teachers, and its system. Temporarily, I thought, if there were more teachers who thought like Mr.MacFarland in reality, students would embrace learning because Mr.MacFarland truly knows how to speak to a student.…

Today, children are coming to the schools with such wide spread levels of preparedness, emotionally, socially, and academically. Our challenge as a teacher is to meet them where they are and give them the tools to learn to their highest potential. We must be skilled with differentiation to meet the varied learning styles, and have the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students who need remediation and keep our brighter students enriched and challenged. Our…
