"Davy Crockett: The Man and the Legend" is Matt McKee's examination of the claim of Ulster-Scott heritage made on Davy Crockett's behalf. To start of his examination, Mr.McKee provides a relatively accurate overview of Davys life, giving his readers a clear sense of the man Davy was. This image of Davy is then examined for any traces of the racial or cultural traits of a Ulster-Scott. The final part of his examination looks at the legend of Davy Crockett and compares it to the mythical Hound of Ulster Cuchulian. In the end, Mr. McKee comes to the conclusion that Davy Crockett is not connected to the Ulster-Scotts,…

George Armstrong Custer, although a very successful military leader in the days of the Cival War, is probably best known for his biggest failure. “The battle, also known as ‘Custer’s Last Stand’, was part of the Black Hills War against a confederation of Plains Indians, including the Cheyenne and Dakota Sioux” (Foner http://www.history.com). This controversial battle is in line with the courageous, yet reckless, personality of Custer as a commander. Although his bold actions made him a distinguished cavalry commander, they were also his undoing (Foner http://www.history.com). Born in New Rumley, Ohio in 1839, George Custer was accepted into West Point Acadamy while he was only 17 years old.…

David Crockett’s childhood was filled with adventure and struggles. One of the most defining moments in David’s life occurred around the age of twelve. David’s father suggested to a man that was traveling over 300 miles with a large stock of cattle, that David assists him on his trip. The man agreed to this and so young David and the Old Dutch man set off on this long journey. When they arrived to their destination the man seemed very pleased with David’s assistance and insisted that he stay and not return to his family. David obeyed the man, but with a weary heart. He eventually returned to his family by getting a ride home without the consent of the Old Dutch man. I think this was a turning point in the life of David Crockett, because it taught him the value of hard work, family, and also the harsh realities of other people. It taught him that not all men were to be trusted.…

The job of an explorer required the overcoming of many challenging obstacles and hardships. Thompson travelled over 128, 747 km, a staggering number that was ten times higher than the miles travelled by Lewis & Clark. Throughout that astonishingly long journey, Thompson would’ve hiked many hills, mountains, rivers, etc. Thompson also faced the obstacles of extreme heat, extreme cold, snow, rain, etc. “Going over one set of falls, Thompson and his men lost their canoes and almost all their gear. They were near starvation when they limped into a Native encampment a week later.” This was not the only major hardship David Thompson faced during his career as an explorer. “He survived numerous accidents, a near fatal case of malaria, debilitating cholera, blindness in one eye, and rheumatism in his leg.” This proves just how mentally and physically tough David Thompson really was. Thompson’s upbringings were also tough as his father passed away when he was a young boy. This forced Thompson to be placed into a school of orphans and foundlings. With all these mental obstacles, Thompson still managed to work hard in school and receive an apprenticeship with the Hudson’s Bay Company at age 14. Without his mental and physical toughness, David Thompson would not have been able to succeed in his achievements as a legendary explorer.…

As Arthur Ash says, “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost.” By this, he means that being a hero is not about rising above by putting others below you, but rising above by putting others above you to help out the overall wellness of this country. Petty Officer David Black decided he was going to serve this amazing country right after he graduated high school. He has shared a few of the many great experiences, good or bad, and he shared a few of the effects that the services had on him and some of the lessons he learned from it.…
