The story behind David's “Oath of the Horatill” are the first book of Livy, “The History of Rome” (sections 24-6) which was elaborated by Dionysius in book 3 of his Roman Antiquities. It depicted a scene from a Roman legend about a rivalry between two warring cities, Rome and Alba Longa. In the painting, David sets the background a trio of historic Roman arches, creating visual stability and also separating the foreground figures into three dividing sections of individuals; the Horatii on the left, the father in the center, and women and children on the right. The three brothers are overlapping the profile, which usually seen in classical art. It also helps David to balances the work by the repetitive, not only the arches, the Horatii and the three woman, but also the swords of three and notion of three geometric forms.
