One of the many problems that I now face at West Point is my inability to cope with my transition from being an Enlisted Soldier in an elite unit, where I was treated with the same respect as the command staff was given, to being subjected to the disrespect and domination by meritless upperclassmen. While I have been at West Point I have been told that whatever I did in the Army is invalid because I am “not in the Army anymore,” I’m at West Point several times. I have been asked to abandon all of my previously instilled values in place of the ones assigned to me here. There are many contributing factors in my development and the structuring of my personality that enabled me to encounter this problem. I will also make use of Marcia’s expansion on Erikson’s theory of development, which classifies the progresses of identity development in an individual. Along with Erikson and Marcia’s theory of development, I will also employ one of the traits in the Five Factor model to evaluate and learn about the personality traits that enable me to encounter my challenge at West Point. In an effort to learn more about my situation, I will also call on the wisdom of a Firstie in my company to assist by mentorship. Finally, I will apply the theories that I applied to my challenge to the West Point Leadership Development System to gain insight on how this challenge will allow me to become a better officer in the United States
