Every month families look at their bills and write checks or pay their bills online shaking their heads out how much it costs just to live the average lifestyle in the United States. Certain bills we can control like meals, entertainment, vacations, etc. but other bills we cannot control as much like rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, etc. But, what if you could significantly lower your utility rates by almost half? I propose a new service through Duke Energy Corporation known as Duke Saves Initiative. Duke Saves Initiative is an incentive program that is offered to our customers that allows them to make more energy efficient choices and receive rewards and bonuses for making better choices.…
To not have "Day Light Saving Time" (DST) would be a dire mistake! In fact, many Americans today would agree that, DST is needed for today's busy world. These varying time changes are not for people to just become confused, its to allow the community to make most of the daily lifestyle we are used to that will keep us safe!…
I totally disagree with the whole idea of Daylight saving. It was introduced to Canada about 100 years ago ago and it is now being continues as an eight month ritual. This whole idea was introduced to Canada during the World War I to save coal as it was useful in the wars. Till now the whole point of this idea is to conserve and save energy but in fact we are actually wasting energy. Studies by the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research have proven that despite its intended purpose, it is wasting energy that is meant to be saved! Losing one hour of sleep is really a huge thing for many people. It makes us less productive and worse still, productivity is unaffected when we are given an extra hour sleep several months later. After people…
To begin with,”An Analysis of Daylight Saving Time” shows proof that Daylight Saving Time may be unecessary. For instance, “A 2007 study in California indicated that DST had little or no effect on energy consumption that year.” California actually found the exact opposite answer compared to the study performed in 1970. “In the 1970s studies claim DST saved about 1% per day in energy costs.” But Callifornias studies says “The researchers theorized that the energy jump was caused in part by increased use of air conditioning as a result of maximizing daylight…
The concept of time has always perplexed man and woman alike throughout history. The Egyptians developed the first device to measure this mysterious force. Ever since then, humans have created a society where time controls everything: when to wake up, when to go to work, when to go to bed, etc. As time goes on, things change and previous trends in one generation become outdated in the next. However, many individuals cannot bring themselves to adjust to modern life. During the early formations of the United States of America, pervicacious loyalists refused to change their stance pertaining to preserving British authority in the colonies. Then, Southern states during the mid- to late-nineteenth century were…
One of the most prominent social constructs that has been in place since the Mayan civilization is that of time, which has gone on to become one of the most integral parts of human life. Ever since the creation of a standard time system, people have been searching for ways to save time in the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives in order to get the most time that they can out of one day. One such method that has been implemented around much of the world is that of Daylight Savings Time, or DST, in order to maximize the amount of daylight during different seasons. The creation of DST, just like the usage of other controversial solutions to solve societal problems, has sparked a debate about whether the system actually provides any benefit,…
In the past, when it wasn’t mandatory for the states to participate in daylight savings time, it was up to them to do it. Now we already have time zones meaning that every state has its own separate time to keep up with. Now if it were up to each individual state that is extra time that has to be taken into account when bus schedules are made because of the buses that go across state lines. This causes inconsistencies throughout the whole bus schedules in every state. This angered the Department of Transportation which oversees the bus routes, and this issue resulted in “Congress established…the Uniform Time Act,” (Source A). They did this because the DOT requested for…
I have read many well supported articles proving that Daylight Saving Time should be gotten rid of. Every article I have read about removing Daylight Saving Time has proven that it decreases productivity, because everyone got an hour of sleep stolen. It is also proven that, because of Daylight Saving Time, that people…
Conservation of energy is wonderfully demonstrated through the employment of daylight saving time. Energy consumption is lessened which greatly impacts the preservation of the environment. This is evidenced by Source B, which states that electricity usage is reduced by about one percent during each day. By DST, if less energy is being consumed, the opportunities of mankind having a safer and more presentable environment are much higher. Furthermore, DST not only aids the surroundings but also teaches people to use energy wisely. Individuals will be fully aware of the benefits that come with saving energy. Continuous application of DST provides a well preserved atmosphere.…
“Students and teachers should be in favor of later school start time because it results in increased grades, more hours of sleep, and fewer students sleeping in class.” Students should be given a chance to get enough sleep and it may result in higher grades in school and teachers will have more energy to teach student the fundamentals of school better. This method of teaching kids started in 2002 when school boards had the idea starting school at a later time. So students can get a better experience at school…
for high schools. While some passionately believe that later start times may be troublesome, it is not. Students circadian rhythm are on schedule, causing them to be healthier; their testing scores, grades and attentiveness are increased; students’ performance in sports is positively amplified; community service, library hours, student jobs and school clubs are not affected; and the number of drowsy teen accidents are reduced. This still may seem like it does not prove great results, but it does. Schools all over the United States have made this change and it has brought great improvement. With this new efficiency that high school students will possess, it not only improves their study habits, but also their school’s overall performance. This is not a drastic change in time, it will only be pushed back an hour or two. Teachers, parents, school administrators need to start discussing this topic. The more later they push away from deciding, the more sleep deprived the students are. This is a complicated issue to decide on. They need to hold staff meetings at least once a day in the week to discuss transportation, teachers’ schedules, after school activities, and so on. Involve parents in the decision first and then see what happens next. But districts need to keep in mind that the benefits are far greater than the…
Daylight savings time is defined as an adjustment of time to create longer lengths of sunshine in the summer. This notion of elongated summer days was first introduced in 1918, when America was at war with many different countries (Source A). The reasoning behind this was to conserve more energy for the soldiers fighting overseas. However I was repealed the following year. It was brought about again during World War II, for the same reason. It has undergone many changes, but still remains in effect today. The latest change to the institution was that it was to begin on the second Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday of November. Even though it supposedly conserves energy, is it actually worth it?…
The government could help conserve energy by providing more grants to individuals. Those grants would help reduce heating and energy efficiency by insulating homes properly, changing the lighting of the home and providing energy efficient water heaters and appliances. This can help conserve and reduce the energy consumption in their homes…
A study conducted by the University of Minnesota with nearly 9,000 high school students showed improved grades, test scores, and overall performance in core subjects when the school start times were switched to later hours.3 Instead of students get D’s and C’s in school, they’re now getting A’s and B’s. There future will become brighter since it will be easier to get accepted into a superb college. Student’s success in the school will be improved if schools start time is…
Americans need to conserve energy to save money. Electric bills get larger with the more energy you use. Most people like to save money. The average household spends $5,550 per year on energy. (http://www.ase.org).…
