Definition Essay Fear
Helen Keller once said, “Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. The fearful are caught as often as the bold.” Fear is and always will be perplexing. Why is this the case? Fear is the sense that there is a person or thing which is dangerous and may lead to failure or harm. Being a sense, fear is not something that a person can fully understand. Fear is something that all people experience.
To understand what fear is, a person should look at some common appearances of fear in daily life. People fear many things. People fear animals: spiders, snakes, birds, chickens, cats, bugs, and insects. People fear powerful things: thunder, lightning, needles, and cancer. People fear abstractions: death, loneliness, failure, intimacy, abandonment, commitment, the unknown, success, and fear

Roosevelt said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself…” Most people consider this to be a very wise saying, but he missed the point. Fear, similar to many things that people fear, is not a bad thing. In the same way that hunger shows the need to eat and being tired shows the need to rest, fear shows the need to react in some way. If people fear fear, how are they able to yield to the threat of pain or failure. It is no good to embrace a thing (fear) that makes you dislike that thing. It is cowardly to hide from instincts, because instincts can protect from harm and failure. This fear of failure, however, is a very threatening topic for many people. In fact, many have said that the fear of public speaking is the most common fear. Why do so many people fear the failure involved in public speaking? People want to do their best work in every moment. When someone does a paper, for example, he wants to get the best grade he can. He does not want the punishment. The threat of the punishment that makes him want to do his best is fear. It is the anxiety that occurs when the pressure mounts, and expectations are

Theodore Roosevelt once said, “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” What is fear? Fear can be a noun or a verb. In the noun form, it is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. In the verb form, it is to be afraid of someone or something that is dangerous, painful, or threatening. If one person looks into fear, then that person becomes feared. But imagine a whole society or community looking into fear. The fear not only gets larger as it spreads, but it also gets more fearful than it already is. The power of fear can be displayed in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible and in Ronald Oakley’s “The Great Fear”. As fear moves on from one mind to the next, it leaves the victim panicked and paranoid about everything that revolves around him or her. This “symptom” is known as hysteria. In The Crucible, the hysteria greatly affected the people of Salem. As well as “The Great Fear”, the whole world was in chaos and turmoil due to mass hysteria. The consequences that followed were innocent people became accused and were persecuted (affected victims), self control and limits to go out of hand (people behaved hysterically), unjustified trials and judgments or accusations to be declared (pressures), and superiors to become defied (misuse of power).…

There is the fight or flight that every living being uses, animal and human. Humans often have other bodily reactions to fear, such as fast heart rate, sweaty palms and many others. Often times, the same person can have different reactions to different situations. For example, when I take a big test or write an essay, my hands begin to sweat. Not only does this help me calm down, I am able to focus on the task at hand. I have had a lasting fear of “The back room” in my house, it is a room that is unfinished and is used for storage purposes. I fear the room because it has a decent amount of old stuff, the room is dusty, and it is a dwelling for many arthropods and arachnids. I do not hate the room itself, because it holds the water heater and all the tools to make my house work smoothly, but I fear what lies behind the boxes, the old board games, and the unknown inside it all. Every time I have to go back in the room, I shiver and shudder and pray that there is not any sudden movement that passes my feet. While I shiver at the thought of bugs and the unknown I also have a terrible fear of heights. My fear is so bad I can barely go on the final step of a six foot ladder. I refuse to go into the attic and I scoff at the idea of helping my sister put Christmas lights on the roof. When I do come to a situation when I am on a rooftop or on a mountain overlooking a valley, not only am I…

By definition, fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat”. However it should be perceived as a motivation to accomplish new challenges. In fact, students should be encouraged to let fear of failure become an opportunity to succeed. Such is the success experience of Thomas Edison, whose most memorable invention was the light bulb, accomplishing his final goal after 1,000 tries. “How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” a reporter asked. “I didn’t fail 1,000 times,” Edison responded. “The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.” As Thomas Edison encourages, failure does not really exist, “failure” is just the process of success, the step by step we have to make to get where we want to be which certainly can take us longer but, it will be worth the knowledge you will acquire. In other words, when we fear failure, we challenge ourselves to do better, to be patient and to let ourselves grow as we learn from each step and…
