Fear as described in the dictionary as an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous likely to cause pain or a threat.
In my Opinion fear can be taken two ways it can be a good thing or bad thing. Fear is a emotional response induced by threat fear can lead us to hide or run away or freeze in our shoes.
Fear can stop us from doing things that we as a person are afraid, something dangerous for example brian fears not being able to go back home and fears being isolated after the plane crash, part of that fear that comes from the fact that he’s totally on his own with no one to lean on whom he can advice too and no one whose advice he can ask no one with whom he can share his fears.

Fear in the short term can be good. Fear in the big picture and in the long term is not good. It wears us down. It’s chemically addictive. It prevents us from using our brain. And most importantly, we create bad fear because it keeps us right where we are. Hobbling us, bad fear chains us to the world we know. Bad fear saps us of life, slowly. It must be destroyed.
In brian’s case fear wasn’t something that is harmful in fact in brian’s case it’s something that is needed that helped him survive because being stranded on a strange place after the plane crash it helped him survive. One good example of this is when he sees a plane fly over hear near the end of the book however sadly the plane fly’s over and doesn’t see him and continues on his way after this brian event it leaves brian devastated and hopeless and perhaps fearful that he wasn’t going to get back home and stay there now that the plane flew over without seeing him, at this brian attempts to commit suicide by cutting himself with his hatchet but survives the attempt. However this makes him determined and embrace the life and take a active role on
