In America the idea of freedom changes and grows to reflect the diversity of its people. America has always been a land of rich ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This diversity stimulates the exchange of ideas, generates debate, conflict, and ultimately compromise so that ideas once accepted as truths give way to new understanding.
America can be defined as the land of the immigrant. Since even before the United States came into existence people from all over the world traveled to North America seeking good fortune. America is made up of working immigrants who laid down the foundations of what America is today. The Constitution says that securing liberty's blessings are its purpose. Maybe a look back into the past of America and its short history will serve as evidence and facts about what America really is. From what is found two things certainly separate America from the rest; her freedom and diversity. In Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself, he states how Americans are all different but the same, he says “one of the nation of many nations, the smallest the same and the largest the same” (Whitman 16). What he means by one nation of many nations is that he is a citizen of America which holds a plethora of other people from other nations. Even during the colonial era, the characteristics that distinguished American society was the diversity of its people. By European standards, America was extremely diverse. A fifth of the entire population was African American. Three-fifths of whites were English in ancestry and the other fifth was Irish or Scottish. The remainder was of French, Dutch, Swedish, and German. As one can see, America, above all is a quite diverse country and has been since the beginning of its’ time. American citizens represent a huge scale of cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. America is often characterized as a nation of immigrants and is often referred to as the "melting pot" due to successive waves of immigrants from around the world coming to America. America has let more immigrants in than any other country, more than fifty million total, and today welcomes almost seven hundred thousand new immigrants a
