Essay 1 (Loyalty)
Loyalty is defined as the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations. A story that defines loyalty to me is a well-known statue in Edinburgh of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye terrier who captured the hearts of the British public in the late 19th century when the dog maintained laying over the grave of his master for fourteen years. The dog stayed loyal to his owner for fourteen years even when his owner was not able to reciprocate the loyalty in return. This story shows what loyalty should be and how important it is to be loyal in all the relationship you have. Being faithful to one’s allegiance to a government or state or to a person conceived as imposing obligation”. This definition seems formal and obligatory. I suggest that loyalty is not an obligation imposed by outside influences, but internal moral characteristics and decisions that are given freely.
Horton is saying that people influence their own decisions and actions, which impact the devotion we have towards our significant other. We devote our time, faith, and love into our relationships and with that loyalty becomes relevant. It created a wall between them and the trust was completely gone from their relationship. Not only did it affect the trust, but also affected the way my mother viewed my father. It made her cold-hearted towards everything that he did and changed the bond that they once had. Since the loyalty was tarnished, the bond that they had was entirely gone. My parents stayed together even through this hard time, yet the bond they had never came back even to this day. This changed my perception on loyalty entirely because I now know that loyalty is not just based off of the commitment they vowed to keep, for that is just a piece of paper. At the end of the day, loyalty is all about how much work you are willing to put into the relationship to keep the the loyalty remaining the same. Horton says,
Loyalty in the personal realm, which comes out of love, devotion, dedication and commitment to the well being of another, is healthy.
