Definition Essay On Loyalty
Isaiah Hutchinson
Essay 1 (Loyalty)

Loyalty is defined as the state or quality of being loyal; faithfulness to commitments or obligations. A story that defines loyalty to me is a well-known statue in Edinburgh of Greyfriars Bobby, a Skye terrier who captured the hearts of the British public in the late 19th century when the dog maintained laying over the grave of his master for fourteen years. The dog stayed loyal to his owner for fourteen years even when his owner was not able to reciprocate the loyalty in return. This story shows what loyalty should be and how important it is to be loyal in all the relationship you have. Loyalty is an important trait to have in many relationships such as marriage, faith, and friendships because it validates

Being faithful to one’s allegiance to a government or state or to a person conceived as imposing obligation”. This definition seems formal and obligatory. I suggest that loyalty is not an obligation imposed by outside influences, but internal moral characteristics and decisions that are given freely.
Horton is saying that people influence their own decisions and actions, which impact the devotion we have towards our significant other. We devote our time, faith, and love into our relationships and with that loyalty becomes relevant. We make our own decisions and choose what we want from each relationship that we are in; therefore, the choice of loyalty is solely based on whether you make the decision to be loyal to your significant other or

It created a wall between them and the trust was completely gone from their relationship. Not only did it affect the trust, but also affected the way my mother viewed my father. It made her cold-hearted towards everything that he did and changed the bond that they once had. Since the loyalty was tarnished, the bond that they had was entirely gone. My parents stayed together even through this hard time, yet the bond they had never came back even to this day. This changed my perception on loyalty entirely because I now know that loyalty is not just based off of the commitment they vowed to keep, for that is just a piece of paper. At the end of the day, loyalty is all about how much work you are willing to put into the relationship to keep the the loyalty remaining the same. Horton says,
Loyalty in the personal realm, which comes out of love, devotion, dedication and commitment to the well being of another, is healthy. Yet, at times, people are not aware of all the aspects of loyalty within a relationship. No marital contract spells out, or even defines loyalty. Yet, both partners assume that this commitment will be honored. Loyalty does not only mean physical fidelity it includes emotional devotion. Being loyal in every aspect of a couple’s life has many

In this quote you read about Douglass getting into an altercation and Douglass saids “At this moment I resolved for the first time to go to my master and enter a complaint”(Pg 426). Loyalty is a state of devoted attachment to someone or something. Loyalty is perhaps one of the most admirable qualities one can have; it is not only a measure of one's true character, but one's decisions as well. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, there is no greater loyalty than that which exists between young Huck Finn and Jim. Jim demonstrates his loyalty to Huck by remaining with Huck as almost a paternal figure once he misses his turn on the river for Cairo, thereby continuing deeper into the hazardous South. Huck, in turn, demonstrates his loyalty to Jim by returning for Jim once Jim is taken captive. By doing so, Huck also demonstrates his loyalty to humanity through his betrayal of racism. In Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Twain develops the theme that loyalty is measured through one's actions in times of crisis by having Huckleberry break class lines and befriend a runaway slave in the racist antebellum years.…

Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, is a story that shows how weak people can be in the sense of loyalty. This loyalty, defined as putting strong will and strength into a relationship in all cases is being put into a light of making choices. This means you have to make the decision between Loyalty and "Friends", which also can be described as people that are together but basically are lonely for themselves and that decision-making is important.…

Loyalty can be known as a commitment a person will take to show their worthiness. In "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," loyalty had been misused by Sir Gawain. Gawain had broken his promise to the king he had stayed with by not giving him the girdle the queen had given him. This action made Gawain un loyal because he broke the one rule the king had given him. A similar action takes place in the present day, in which an act of un loyalty can be made through marriage. Husbands or wives can break their vows by cheating on their spouse. Just like Gawain who had cheated his own way out of the castle. These two scenarios both show acts of breaking a commitment known as un loyalty, which defies chivalry.…

Lastly, everyone was loyal to Slim. The rest of the characters considered him as the “prince” of the farm. At a young age, I was attracted to my neighborhood church. I remember waking up to dress and walk myself there, to be around others in the community coming together for united purposes. After reading this specific lens focuses its ideals as said ‘through Nature or given by God’ as the way for man kind to strive to abide. A secondary value of this lens is loyalty. Nowadays, I find myself having to think about how far one should take loyalty. I have been in many debates on fairness to others. Defending friendships or family to the point where I’ve lost a few friendships from debating what I thought was right in a situation and came off too strong.…
